Veronica L. Becker (1964 – 2022)
GREENPORT—Veronica L. Becker, 57, of Greenport, a lifelong resident, died Thursday, January 27, 2022 at home.
Born in Hudson, March 30, 1964, she was the daughter of William and Sheila (Shook) Proper.
Ms. Becker was the owner of Greenhouse Plants and Flowers in Albany.
She is survived by: one son, Ross (Keri); daughter, Catherine (Frank); brother, William Proper, Jr.; sister, Barbara Jean Proper; grandchildren, Mason, Hailey, Evelyn and Francis. Services were private. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery Menands. Arrangements were with Sacco Funeral Home.
Patti-Ann Engstrom (1966 – 2022)
HUDSON—Patti-Ann Engstrom, 56, of Philmont, formerly of New Rochelle, died Saturday, March 9, 2022 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Born February 24, 1966 in New Rochelle, she was the daughter of Patrick and Eleanor (Loretto) Stanfield.
Arrangements with the Sacco Funeral Home, Greenport are incomplete and will be announced.
Harold W. Traganza (1935 – 2022)
ANCRAM—Harold W. “Socky” Traganza, 86, passed away at home March 15, 2022. He was born May 8, 1935 to the late William and Helen (Wood) Traganza.
He joined the Army after graduating from Roeliff Jansen High School in 1954.
His love for animals inspired him to start a career raising and racing Standardbred horses all over the East coast. He was an owner, breeder, trainer and driver until the age of 80.
He is survived by: his daughter, Stacey and her husband Brian Faulisi of West Glenville.
At his request there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Columbia-Greene Humane Society, Hudson. Arrangements are with the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, Copake.
Peter J. Groll (1957 – 2022)
HUDSON—Peter J. Groll, 64, passed away with his family at his side, March 16, 2022 at the Firemen’s Home after battling cancer.
Born August 23, 1957, he was the son of Ellen (Colwell) and the late Christopher Groll, Sr.
He was employed in the family business, Colwell Cartage of Hudson, until joining the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office where he worked as a deputy sheriff dispatcher/operator for 28 years, retiring in 2017. During his tenure with the Sheriff’s Office, he also served as union treasurer.
Mr. Groll was a lifelong member of Greenport Pumper Company #1, where he served honorably as president, secretary, treasurer, lieutenant and captain. He was also secretary to the Greenport Fire Commission.
He was predeceased by his father, Christopher Groll, Sr.
He is survived by: his mother, Ellen Groll, of Hudson; his wife of 40 years, Barbara (Sharpe) of Cairo; son, Ryan Groll; daughter, Jaime Sandagato of Hudson; granddaughter, Aubrey Gray; sister, Ellen (Dan) Miller; brother, Christopher J. Groll, Jr., (Kathleen Link); sisters-in-law, Betsy Sharpe (John Albin), Susan Sharpe (Joseph Reh), Jennifer Sharpe (Christopher Taylor); aunts, Patricia Colwell Hart and MaryLou Groll of Hudson; cousin, Lynn Hart; many other cousins and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 23, 2022, 10 a.m. from St. Mary’s Church, Hudson, with the Reverend Winston Bath officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Church Road, Greenport. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2022, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bates & Anderson Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.
