Victor P. Ambrose (1920 – 2017)

HUDSON—Victor Peter Ambrose of Hollowville passed into eternal peace July 20, 2017.

He was born April 15, 1920 at Southwick, MA, to Victor J. Ambrose and Helen Palatovicks Ambrose.

Mr. Ambrose is survived by: his wife, Ruth Wildermuth Ambrose; sons, Peter Ambrose and David Ambrose; daughter-in-law, Virginia Ambrose; grandchildren, Abigail Ambrose, Susan Ambrose (Michael McGuire) and Margaret Ambrose (Eric Filante); great-grandchildren, Olin Ginn and Ryan Ginn; sister, Jenny Ambrose Kilmartin of Waterbury, CT; brother, Wilfred Ambrose of Austin, TX; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ambrose was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Vitalja Ambrose Markovich; brother, Alger Ambrose and sister, Florence Ambrose.

A graduate of the former Roe Jan High School, Mr. Ambrose played football there at a time when players were protected only by leather helmets; he is one of many players remembered in the Taconic Hills Athletic Hall of Fame. As an adult, he was the catcher on the Hollowville team of the Columbia County Twilight Baseball League often playing nightly throughout the county.

Mr. Ambrose began working at the age of 13 for Andy Hallenbeck in Hollowville as a vegetable peddler and then worked full-time on the Columbia County road crews and in a Connecticut World War II defense plant, settling on his parents’ dairy farm in Upper Hollowville when the government called for farmers during the war.

After marrying Ruth Wildermuth in 1945, he took over the farm as sole proprietor. In 1985 he sold his dairy herd and transitioned the farm to vegetables, egg production and fleece. He was a beekeeper for 30 years and was passionate about raising and eating garlic. He started farming with a team of horses and ended with a John Deere.

In 2007 Mr. Ambrose was honored with a plaque for 70 years of continuous membership in Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia County and was a member for a total of 80 years, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to his craft of farming.

A celebration of Mr. Ambrose’s life will be held at Scarecrow Farm in September, an announcement to follow.

Marilyn J. Borras (1933 – 2017)

VALATIE—Marilyn Joyce Borras passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family August 14, 2017.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert M. Borras and dedicated her entire life to working to support her family.

She is survived by: three children, Bonni Jo Hall of Niverville, Jody George Herbst (Vikki) of Stuyvesant Falls and Lisa Lei Herbst of Valatie; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, whom she loved very much; two sisters and one brother, Laura Reutzel (Fred) of Stuyvesant, Shirley Nightingale of St. Petersburg, FL, and Edward Zeigler (Marie) of Valatie; many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Russell Zeigler.

She was an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 1010 Kinderhook Street (Route 9), Valatie.

She enjoyed volunteering in the kitchen, she and her friends could often be found there laughing and enjoying each other.

Mrs. Borras enjoyed baking, traveling and being with her family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 17, 11 a.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Castleton. Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Route 9, Valatie 12184.

Jolanda Owens (1924 – 2017)

HUDSON—Jolanda “Julia” Owens passed away August 13, 2017. She was 94 years old.
She was born March 23, 1924 to Vincenza (Cozza) and Gabriel Arcuri. She worked at Marsh’s Department Store and London Bridal in Hudson.
Mrs. Owens is survived by: her son, Richard (Phyllis) Owens; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary (Arcuri) Moe; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clayton; son, David; several brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, August 17, 10 a.m. from St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen Street Hudson. Interment will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery.
