Eileen M. O’Sullivan (1910 – 2014)
PHILMONT—Eileen M. O’Sullivan, 104, of Claverack passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at Pine Haven Nursing Home.
Born January 19, 1910 in Glengarriff County Cork, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Mortimer and Hannah (Deacy) O’Sullivan.
Mrs. O’Sullivan was a homemaker and loved being surrounded by her family. She was co-owner of O’Sullivan’s Grocery in the Bronx prior to moving upstate. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and loved crocheting and knitting. She gave her handiwork as gifts and to various charities. She also liked to work in her garden.
Mrs. O’Sullivan was the beloved mother of Joan Donohue of Claverack; loving mother-in-law of Phil Balem of San Antonio, Texas; devoted grandmother of Joanne Donohue Allie, Tom and Debbie Donohue, Joseph and Amy Donohue, J. Philip and Katie Balem, Maura Tilton and Eileen and Jose Laguna; loving great-grandmother of Thomas Allie, Thomas Donohue, Katie DeBell-Donnelly, Aidan and Landon Donohue, Joseph and Conor Balem, Victoria Tilton and Antonio Laguna.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; her daughter, Eileen Balem; her son-in-law, Thomas Donohue, and two brothers, Walter and Liam.
Calling hours are Thursday, August 7, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, August 8, 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 301 Allen Street, Hudson. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhala. Visit www.batesanderson.com to leave condolences for the family.
Pansy L. Mackey (1949 – 2014)
HUDSON—Pansy L. Mackey, 65, of Hudson died Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born May 1, 1949 in Dunn, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William and Melvina (Davis) Mackey.
She was employed as a sales associate with Walmart in Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Mackey loved to play softball and cards and was devoted to her family.
She is survived by: her daughter, Gwanda Edwards of Albany; two granddaughters, Adia Merritt and Melvina Edwards, and a great-grandson, Nyron Harding.
A calling hour will be Wednesday, August 6, 11 a.m. at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson followed by services at noon at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.
Barry J. Mahar (1953 – 2014)
HUDSON—Barry J. Mahar, 61, of Hudson, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital after almost a year-long battle with cancer.
Born January 10, 1953 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Ray L. “Jack” Mahar of Central Square and MaryAnn (Yates) Mahar of Hudson. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Amber Mahar.
Mr. Mahar is survived by: his devoted significant other, Mildred L. (Dolly) Pullen of Hudson; his step-mother, Rosemary Mahar of Central Square; one brother, Matthew (Tracy) Mahar of Hastings; two sisters, Debra (Mike) Guzzetta of Tarpon Springs, FL, and Sheilah (Brent) Mahar of Central Square; his good friend, David Charron of Chatham, who was like a son to him; one son, Barry J. Mahar, Jr.; one daughter, Crista Mahar; and the mother of his children, Kathy Mahar of Central Square.
At Mr. Mahar’s request, there will be no services for him. He will be cremated and buried alongside his father in the West Ghent Cemetery, after which a memorial celebration will take place.

Marybeth Gottshall (1948 – 2014)
ALBANY—Marybeth Claire Gottshall, 66, of Niverville died on her birthday, July 23, 2014, at Albany Medical Center.
Born in Seattle, Washington, she was the daughter of Norma Groves Soden and Robert Soden.
She grew up in Germany and Korea before attending Michigan State University to study art.
After college she lived for many years in East Lansing, Michigan, where she raised her daughter. She moved to Columbia County in the early 1990s, and there she developed many close and sustaining friendships and painted prolifically.
Ms. Gottshall held several jobs during her life, but art was always her vocation. Her paintings embody her pleasure in careful composition and the qualities of color and light. She also loved to work in her garden, and was a talented guitarist and singer. She loved parties and celebrations, and had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful laugh.
Survivors include: her mother, Norma Andrew; her daughter, Karin Gottshall; her sister, Roberta Brill; her brother, Timothy Soden-Groves and many dear friends and relations.
