Joseph Edward Hyson Sr. (1935 – 2014)

VALATIE—Joseph Edward Hyson Sr. died July 2, 2014 at Barnwell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Pennsylvania, February 2, 1935, the son of the late John A. and Florence McShea Hyson.

He grew up and was educated in Pennsylvania where he was an active member of the Catholic Church serving as an altar boy and youth minister.

Mr. Hyson attended Haverford High School, Villa Nova University and later attended and graduated with an MBA from Penn State University where he was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi.

Mr. Hyson remained an avid Nittany Lions football fan and attended many games through the years

After graduation he traveled to Greensboro, NC, where he began his career as a salesman in the steel industry. As he was promoted in the company, he and his family traveled throughout Maryland, Ohio and most of New England. Later in life he became a financial and estate planner for IDS American Express, where he worked until his retirement.

Mr. Hyson served on the Planning Board and Zoning Committee for the Town of Kinderhook and was the fire commissioner for the Village of Kinderhook. He was a member of the Kinderhook Elks and served as a pack leader for the Cub Scouts and scout master for the Boy Scouts. For leisure, Mr. Hyson enjoyed fishing, photography and travel.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Virginia Hance Hyson. He is survived by: his son, Todd and Todd’s wife Theresa; his daughter, Whitney Elizabeth; his sons, Bart and Joseph, Jr.; his brother, John Hyson and John’s wife Mary Lou; a sister, Jeanette Foley; four grandchildren, Candace Howley, Amanda Hyson, Gregory Hyson and Tiffany Buono; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Susan Matlock Hyson.

Family will receive friends at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham, Wednesday, July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 10 at St. John the Baptist Church in Valatie at 10 a.m. At Mr. and Mrs. Hyson’s, request interment of both their ashes will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.

Ellen K. Zimmermann (1917 – 2014)

BROCKPORT— Ellen K. Zimmermann, formerly from Northport, Long Island; Valatie and Albany, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the age of 96.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh King Zimmermann and sister, Muriel K. Gibbons, April 26.

She is survived by: her daughter, Maryellen (Jay) Giese; grandsons, Drew Giese and Adam (Emily) Giese; sisters, Jeanne M. Leavitt from Rochester, MN, Jacquelyn King of Denver, CO; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mrs. Zimmermann’s funeral mass will be celebrated November 23 at 2 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 1025 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.

Donations in Mrs. Zimmermann’s memory may be made to Lakeside Beikirch Care Center, 170 West Avenue, Brockport 14420; Hochstein School of Music, 50 Plymouth Avenue North, Rochester 14614 or the Rochester Oratorio Society, 1050 East Avenue, Rochester 14607.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fowler Funeral Home, Inc., 340 West Avenue, Brockport 14420.
