Deacon Martin F.J. Stosiek (1927 – 2014)
ALBANY—Deacon Martin F.J. Stosiek, 86, of Hillsdale passed away Wednesday May 14, 2014 at Albany Medical Center.
He was born July 25, 1927 in Germany, the son of Franz and Ida (Maciejek) Stosiek.
He and his wife, Gertraud, owned and operated Berkshire Pottery in Hillsdale.
Deacon Stosiek was ordained June 19, 1976 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. He served at St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church in Copake Falls, now the Parish of Our Lady of Hope. While there he was instrumental in starting many programs including the Human Developmental Fund, the Tri Town Community Loan Fund and the Christmas Food Basket Program for those in need. He also initiated the senior lunch program at the church which was later expanded to include all of Columbia County.
Appointed by then Bishop Howard Hubbard, he served on the Diocesan Rural Life Commission and the Peace and Justice Commission.
Survivors include: his wife, Gertraud (Nieter) Stosiek of Hillsdale; five children, Martin Stosiek, Jr., of Hillsdale, Michael Stosiek of Lake Placid, Christina Stosiek of Germany, Christopher Stosiek of Hillsdale and Erika Radice of Hillsdale. He also leaves eleven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 19 at 11 a.m. from the Parish of Our Lady of Hope, 8074 State Route 22 in Copake Falls.
Friends are invited and may call Sunday, May 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22 in Copake Falls.
Interment will be in New St. Bridget’s Cemetery.

Robert D. Plass (1928 – 2014)
STOCKPORT—Robert D. Plass, 85, of Stockport passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Hudson May 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Robert and Helen (Coons) Plass.
Mr. Plass was employed in the shipping and receiving department at the V & O Press in Greenport. He was a 70-year member of the Stockport Volunteer Fire Company #1, where he served as a line officer for 27 years, 12 of those as chief. Additionally, he served as a company officer for 10 years. At the time of his death he was safety and accountability officer. While he was chief, he obtained two new engines, an emergency truck, and placed in service a brush truck “Smokey” which resides at the Firemen’s Home Museum in Hudson. Mr. Plass was a lifelong resident of Stockport. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed playing cards.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor (Cavanagh) Plass; his son, Robert J. Plass and three sisters, Margaret Plass, Sarah Platner and Alvina Smith.
Mr. Plass is survived by: his devoted children, Sandra (Richard) Novak of Stockport, Sharon (Don) Hover of Stuyvesant Falls and Ronald and Randall, both of Stockport; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Ralph Lasher; his sister-in-law, Betty Ahrens; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Sunday, May 18, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, Hudson.
Services will be conducted Monday, May 19, 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Stuyvesant Falls.

Margaret S. McDarby (1916 – 2014)
HUDSON—Margaret S. McDarby, 98, of Stottville passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born in Hoboken, NJ, April 26, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Leace.
She was employed in office administration at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Mrs. McDarby loved socializing at the Hudson Boat Club, the NY Yankees and reading. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. McDarby was predeceased by her husband, Clifford G. McDarby; two sons, Allen and George McDarby and a grandson, Lee McDarby.
She is survived by: her devoted grandson and his wife, James H. and Hope McDarby of Stuyvesant; two grandchildren, Connor and Olivia McDarby; several nieces and nephews.

Brenda Bermel (1943 – 2014)
HUDSON—Brenda Mae Bermel, 71, of Livingston passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born February 11, 1943 in Rhinebeck, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Margaret (Coons) Miller.
Mrs. Bermel was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She volunteered her time at several nursing homes and with senior citizens in the area. She loved animals, especially her best friend “Mittens”.
Mrs. Bermel is survived by: her husband, William “Pete” Bermel, Sr., of Livingston; her children, Deborah Bermel of Arizona, Tina Bermel of Virginia, William (Tina) Bermel, Jr., of North Carolina, Raymond Bermel of Catskill and John (Jackie) Bermel of Hudson; seven grandsons; five granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; four brothers; four sisters; many nieces and nephews.

William Henry Bradway, Jr. (1926 – 2013)
HAINES CITY, FL—William “Bill” H. Bradway, Jr., formerly of Columbia County, passed away November 1, 2013.
He was born January 2, 1926 to the late William and Florence Bradway in Pittsfield, MA. He married Emily Waters June 10, 1950.
He served for six years in the U.S. Navy and three years in the reserves. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a gunners mate on a destroyer that took him to many different countries. He then spent much of his life managing dairy farms in New York State.
He enjoyed building wood stoves and picnic tables. He also enjoyed hunting. But most of all he loved his family. He thoroughly enjoyed the noise and chaos of family get-togethers.
He is survived by: his beloved wife of 63 years, Emily; 10 children, sons, William (Sheri) of VA, Chuck of Philmont, Dan (Priscilla) of Philmont, Tom (Kris) of Red Hook, Mike (MaryBeth) of Hillsdale, Robert (Mary) of Copake, Eddie (Lisa) of North Hillsdale; three daughters, Marsha Church of Canada, Debbie (David) Westfall of Stottville and Deane (John) Klugo of Greenport; 28 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Helen Twing; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters and one brother.
He will be greatly missed by his family and the many friends he made at West View Ridge in Florida. A memorial service was held for him there November 8. He was laid to rest in The National Cemetery of Florida.
