John H. Viebrock (1930 – 2013)
GHENT—John H. Viebrock, 83, of Claverack and a life-long resident of Columbia County, died peacefully Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Whittier Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his family.
Born September 24, 1930, he was the son of Maria and John Viebrock who predeceased him.
He was a well-known excavating contractor and enjoyed his passion for flying as a private pilot most of his life.
He was a life-long and active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran church, holding various positions there. Most importantly, he served as the church’s organist for more than 50 years. He also assisted the former St. Matthew’s Lutheran church as organist for eight years. In addition, he was a member of the Philmont Rotary Club, a Taconic Hills School District Board of Education member, and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by Irene, his loving wife of 59 years; son, Richard of Claverack; daughter, Helen Viebrock Hamel of Claverack; grandchildren, Adam (Alison) Viebrock of Carmel, IN, Nathan of Washington, DC, and Kate of Atlanta, GA; sister, Dorothy (Charles) Czirr of Voorheesville; brother-in-law, Ron (Kay) Bauer of Shaftsbury, VT, and several nephews and nieces.
A calling hour will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 15 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 8 Storm Avenue, Hudson.
Services will follow at 3 p.m. at the church. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, December 16 at the Mellenville Union Cemetery.
