Nicholas Zapp (1921 – 2013)

HUDSON—Nicholas Zapp, 92, a lifelong farmer, finished his chores here on earth Friday evening, October 18, 2013 at the Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 11, 1921 in the farmhouse where he spent his life, in West Taghkanic, to Luke and Anna (Myscheshcn) Zapp.

He is survived by: his beloved wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Hallowell); daughter, Audrey (Peter) Meicht; son, Dean (Michele) Zapp; daughter, Jana (Stephen) Packard; daughter, Jamie Libertelli; grandchildren; Louis, Ashley and Nicholas Zapp, Alexander McKnight, Seth Packard and Joseph Libertelli; nieces and nephews, Joseph Zapp, Marie Miller, Ronald Herishko, Edward Cebry, Suzanne C. Zapp, Peter Zapp, Michael Zapp, Michael Nitsky, Jr., Edward

Nitsky, Carol Maddison, Mary Ellen Haro, Carol A. Hodges and Stephen Zapp, Dorothy Robinson and Patrick Robinson.

He was predeceased by his beloved siblings, Anna, Stephen, Morris, John, Michael, Andrew, Julia, Katie, Nellie and Mary.

For the past several years, Mr. Zapp lived at the Pine Haven Home in Philmont, where the kind and caring staff became extended family to him in his daily routines.

The farm was the center of his world, where he loved his family, friends and many good horses over the years. Mr. Zapp was a devoted reader of The Western Horseman magazine for more than 65 years and loved reading about western life.

Going to rodeos was a great pleasure to him and once he rode cowboy star Roy Roger’s famed Palomino, Trigger at Madison Square Garden. That was a cherished memory.

Services are private and under the direction of M. Grimaldi Funeral Home, Chatham.

Donald C. Bartow (1925 – 2013)

VALATIE—Donald C. Bartow, 88, of Valatie died October 20, 2013 at Barnwell Health Facilities.

Born May 22, 1925 in Chatham, he was the son of the late John W. and Martha (Curtis) Bartow.

Mr. Bartow was a proud World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946.

He drove a tractor trailer for many years and enjoyed driving across the country. His mind and hands were never idle and was a great improviser. He had a great sense of humor, was jovial and good-natured and was always helpful to his friends and neighbors.

He is survived by: two daughters, Linda Williams (Lenny) of Valatie, Donna Makoske of Burgaw, NC; a cousin, Robert Pemberton of Latham; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four siblings, John and Raymond Bartow, Peg Bagley and Pearl Dougall.

Private burial will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.

Helen Polidor (1918 – 2013)

HUDSON—Helen Polidor, 95, of Hudson, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Firemen’s Home.

Born January 9, 1918 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Kurowski) Picihna.

During World War II, Mrs. Polidor worked on aircraft in the Buffalo area. She was employed as a machine operator at the Universal Match Factory in Greenport.  Mrs. Polidor was a lifelong area resident, a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hudson, a great cook and loved to travel, especially to Cape Cod. Her greatest love was for her grandsons.

She is survived by: her daughter, Maria (William) Desmond of Valatie; her son, Thomas (Lynn) Polidor of South Carolina; two grandsons, Michael Desmond of Connecticut and David Desmond of Valatie; her sister-in-law, Julia Hallenbeck of Hudson, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ludwig Polidor, and her sister, Jessie Dolan.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, October 24 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, Hudson.

Prayers will be said at 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 25 at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen Street, Hudson.  Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Luyen Van Nguyen (1956 – 2013)

ALBANY—Luyen Van Nguyen, 57, of Hudson, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013 at St. Peter’s Hospital.

He was born in Vietnam, October 9, 1956.

Mr. Van Nguyen was employed as a tool maker at Craftech in Hudson for more than 30 years.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hudson and loved traveling and cooking. Mr. Van Nguyen enjoyed and cherished his children and grandchildren. He was a very generous and charitable person.

He is survived by: three children, Killauda Nguyen-Chavez (Martin) of Hudson, Bria Davey (Michael) of Hudson and Timothy Nguyen of Lansingburgh; four grandchildren, Martin Chavez, Jr., Olivia Chavez, Jalena Nguyen Acevedo and Elizabeth Nguyen; several brothers and sisters residing in Vietnam; his companion, Nga Ha, and a lifelong friend, Audrey Seaton.

Calling hours are 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, October 23 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, Hudson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m., Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen Street, Hudson. Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Joseph J. Stevens (1909 – 2013)

GHENT—Joseph J. Stevens, 104, of Stuyvesant Falls died October 20, 2013 at Whittier Rehabilitation Center.

Born September 6, 1909 in Stuyvesant Falls, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Helen (Cofferan) Stevens.  Mr. Stevens was a supervisor for the New York State Department of Transportation for many years and was the only remaining charter member of the Stuyvesant Falls Fire Company.

He is survived by: two step-sons, Frank Healy of Lakeland, FL, and John Healy of Chestertown; a step-daughter, Sara Jane DiGiacomo of Napa, CA; three step-grandchildren, Maureen Rothbacher of Illinois, Daniel Healy of Kenduskeag, ME, and Patricia Mitchell of Boston, MA; two close friends, Blanche Hotaling of Hudson and William Vick of Stuyvesant Falls; a niece, Barbara Lindenmayer of San Antonio, TX, and several other nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Agnes (Pinkowski) Stevens and two sisters.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 25 at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Route 9, Valatie, with the Reverend Joseph Falletta officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Stuyvesant Falls. A calling hour will be Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuyvesant Falls Fire Company.
