Evelyn Fannie Johnson Allen (1917 – 2013)
SHARON, CT—Evelyn Fannie Johnson Allen, born July 19, 1917, went home to be with the Lord August 2, 2013 at the Sharon Health Care Center.
She was born and raised in Yorktown Heights, the daughter of Loring and Fannie Tice Johnson. After high school, she graduated from the Peekskill Business School and worked at the Mohegan Military Academy in Westchester County.
She was married to Edwin Merl Allen during World War II, and they lived in Yorktown Heights and Stamford, CT, before moving to Pine Plains in 1951, with four children, who continue to celebrate the life of their mother today.
Mrs. Allen is survived by: son, Donald (Pam) Allen of Wilmington, OH, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; son, Douglas (Rosemary) Allen of Chatham, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; son, Thomas (Judith) Allen of Pine Plains, four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; daughter, Constance (William) Mayhew of Millerton, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; niece, Susan (Bruce) Strengberg of Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey.
Mrs. Allen was predeceased by a brother, Raymond L. Johnson, and by three great-grandchildren: Kate Evelyn Jackson, Jesse Hezekiah Diller and Hope Flynn.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen lived in Pine Plains until Mr. Allen died in 1990. Besides being a mother and homemaker, Mrs. Allen was a beloved Sunday School teacher, as well as a pianist and organist for the Northeast Baptist Church in Millerton for many years. Gospel music was a great source of joy in her life. Because Mrs. Allen was an avid Christian believer, it seemed fitting that the music of one of her favorite hymns, “At Calvary,” was playing in her room as she drew her last earthly breath.
Over the years Mrs. Allen shared much happiness and love with her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She also had enduring spiritual friendships with many fellow believers at the Faith Bible Chapel in Millerton, where she was an active member and inspiration to others for the past four decades. Mr. and Mrs. Allen were affectionately known as Ma and Pa Allen by young and old alike in the extended family of the Chapel community.
There are no calling hours.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the immediate family.
A public memorial service celebrating Mrs. Allen’s life will be announced at a later date.
