John J. Macher (1914 – 2013)
HUDSON—John J. Macher, 98, of Hudson, died Friday, May 24, 2013 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born November 18, 1914 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Felix and Karlina Macher.
Mr. Macher was employed as a burnerman with the Universal Atlas Cement Company for more than 27 years. He also worked for Juliard’s for 22 years as a foreman. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hudson and a lifelong area resident.
Surviving are: his daughter, Joan Ingui of Gilbert, AR; his son, Alan Macher of Sarasota, FL; six grandchildren, Alan Macher, Jr., of Greenport, Robert Macher of Hudson, Brian Ingui of Tucson, AZ, Laura Terrile of Singapore, Diana Hines of Maza, AZ, and Jennifer Johnson of Durham, NC; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Filomena (Richards) Macher; two brothers and two sisters.
A calling hour will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 28 at the Bates & Anderson Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson.
Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery. Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church, P.O. Box 323, Hudson 12534.

Lois E. Hoffman (1922 – 2013)
VALATIE—Lois E. Hoffman, 90, of Valatie died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at her home. Born August 30, 1922 in Valatie, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Bessie (Lape) Austin.
Mrs. Hoffman was a homemaker and a communicant of Clearview Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Castleton.
She is survived by: two sons, John Hoffman (Joyce) of Valatie and Timothy Hoffman (Donna) of Stuyvesant Falls; two grandchildren, Jethro Rossman and Cassandra Brady (Brian); many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Hoffman; siblings, Mildred Brady, Alfred Austin, Sr., Ruth Becker and Norm Austin and her grandson, J.J. Hoffman.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 29 at the Clearview Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 275 Schodack Drive, Castleton, with Nick Becker officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Harry H. Fonda (1938 – 2013)
CLAVERACK—Harry H. Fonda, 74, of Claverack, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013 at home with his loving family by his side.
Born October 12, 1938 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Charles and Aline Fonda.
He graduated from Hudson High School in 1956 and then entered the United States Coast Guard. He was an engineman second petty officer, serving on the U.S. Coast Cutter Half Moon until 1960. Mr. Fonda retired from Niagara Mohawk after 34 years of service as a chief line mechanic. He was an assistant coach in the formative years of Pop Warner Football, a life member of the Claverack Fire Department, enjoyed traveling, and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by: his beloved wife, Karen Bailey Fonda; his devoted children, Jeffrey (Cheryl) Fonda of Greenport, Peter (Linda) Fonda of Churchtown and Kristen (Sue) Fonda of Guilderland; his brother, Howard Fonda of Hagaman; three loving grandchildren, Amanda of Cairo, Courtney (USAF) of Beale, CA, and Peter (USN) of Honolulu, HI; two great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Brandon of Cairo; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Elmer Fonda and his sister, Bernice Adriance.
Visiting hours are 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 29 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Helen Matheson
PHILMONT—Helen Matheson, 88, of Philmont, who lived there for the past 45 years, passed away there, Sunday, May 26, 2013.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry.
Mrs. Matheson is survived by: her sister, Nancy (Mac) Pierce of Maryland; her brother, Earl Shaw of California; two daughters, Cynthia (Jim) Gatt and Laura (Michael) Rutkowski; step-daughter, Carolyn Harvey; stepson, David Matheson; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Matheson was a member of the Second Reformed Church in Philmont and a former member of the Columbia Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
“Mom, Mama, Grams, Aunt Helen” will be remembered for her smile and laugh, her cookies each Christmas, playing cards with the “kids”, her love of nature, animals and especially her love and trust in God.
There will be no calling hours. A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
Donations in Mrs. Matheson’s memory can be made to the Sunshine Fund, Pine Haven Nursing Home, P.O. Box 785, Philmont 12565. This fund goes towards activities and equipment for therapy and recreation for the residents.
