Helen Gadolowitz
VALATIE—Helen Gadolowitz, 93, of Valatie, died peacefully at home Thursday, March 28, 2013 after a long illness.
She was predeceased by: her mother and father, Sarah Shakowitz-Gadolowitz and Sam Gadolowitz of Brooklyn; her sister, Lillian Gadolowitz of Holyoke, MA, and longtime friend Clara Buono of Valatie.
Ms. Gadolowitz was a longtime employee at the Coarc Workshop in Mellenville. She attended Coarc’s Promenade Hill Center for many years. After her retirement from the workshop, she later attended Coarc’s Evergreen Hall up until her formal retirement just a few years ago.
Ms. Gadolowitz was a longtime member of the residential program of Coarc, first living at the Chatham residence and later moving to the Valatie residence upon its opening in the early 1990s. She was known to all as a quiet and shy woman who often kept to herself but enjoyed trying new things. She enjoyed bowling, artwork of any kind, needlepoint, knitting, sewing, reading, crafts and collecting jewelry. She also participated frequently in the Special Olympics. Ms. Gadolowitz enjoyed reading and would often read to her friends at home. She was a lover of cats and was the primary caretaker of the two resident cats at the Valatie home; Bossey and Cleo. Ms. Gadolowitz found her voice in the last few years, and her ability to articulate her thoughts and express her joy was nearly unbelievable to those who knew her previously shy, silent nature.
She has left behind her loving family at Coarc and particularly those at the Valatie residence who will miss her sweet exuberance. The Valatie residence family thanks Dr. Neal A. Baillargeon for his outstanding care and to The Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene for their support.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Tuesday, April 2 at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc., Valatie. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Valatie.
James Patrick Shaw (1960 – 2013)
VALHALLA—James Patrick Shaw, 52, of Livingston and a longtime area resident, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Westchester Medical Center awaiting a liver transplant.
Born April 19, 1960 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late William T. and Norma (Markey) Shaw.
Mr. Shaw was a well-known chef in the area. He worked for many years at both the Red Hook Inn and P.J. McGlynn’s in Red Hook. He also worked at Stop & Shop in Rhinebeck
Active in his local fraternal organizations, Mr. Shaw was a longtime member of the Red Hook-Rhinebeck Lodge 2022 BPOE in Red Hook and rose through the chairs. He was exalted ruler for the Elks Lodge #2022 in 2003/2004 and in 2011/2012. He also had the distinction of being the Elks past state vice president for the North Hudson District.
Mr. Shaw was also active in the Red Hook Post #7765, VFW, having ascended to the post of district commander with the VFW.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1979 to 1988.
Mr. Shaw married Joyce Dingmon Fuchs, November 26, 1999 at the Red Hook/Rhinebeck Elks Lodge #2022 in Red Hook and she survives at home.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by: his children, Heather, Matthew, Jason, Brandon and Myriah Shaw; his sisters, Jeanne (Brian) Dowd of TX, Barbara (John) Harvell of Livingston and Norma (TJ) Arata of Rhinebeck; his brothers, his twin Thomas (Christina) Shaw of Brooklyn and Joseph (Tracy) Shaw of Rhinebeck; his grandchildren, Aiden, Matisyn and Anthony Shaw; his step-children, Zach Worth, Francis (Donna) Fuchs, Jr., Marcia Fuchs, Jonathan (Amy) Fuchs, and Cody Fuchs; his step-grandchildren, John Day, Jacob Fuchs and Everett Fuchs, along with many niece, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a sister; Maureen Carroll.
A memorial service will be held at the Elks Lodge #2022, Route 9, Red Hook, Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 3 p.m. Cremation has taken place at Wiltwyck Crematory in Kingston.

Margaret Race (1924 – 2013)
GHENT—Margaret Race, 88, of Greenport died Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Whittier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing facility.
Born July 12, 1924 in Hudson and was a lifelong member of Christ Church Episcopal of Hudson; past president and life member of the Jennings-Willets American Legion Post Auxiliary of Germantown.
Surviving are three sons: Evan (Holly) Race of Gallatin, Geoffrey (Betsy) Race of Center Conway, NH and Lyndon (Sheila) Race of Tiano, VA; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cornelius (Neil) Race, who died May 27, 1995 and three sons, Wayne, Eugene and Cornelius.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at Christ Church Episcopal with Rector John Perry Hudson officiating.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Cedar Park Cemetery of Hudson.
Memorial donations are requested to Christ Church Episcopal, 431 Union Street, Hudson 12524.

Geoffrey T. Bagnall (1948 – 2013)
HUDSON—Geoffrey T. Bagnall, 64, of Livingston, died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born September 1, 1948 in Queens, he was the son of Dorothy and Thomas H. Bagnall, Jr.
Mr. Bagnall was captain of the Nassau County Police Department for more than 20 years and a former Hudson police commissioner from 2000-2002. He was the owner of Sweeps in Hudson for 24 years. He was a member of the Widow Sons Masonic Lodge in Livingston and a member of the Kalicoontie Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by: his wife, Patricia Kerrigan Bagnall of Livingston; two sons, Thomas Bagnall of Claverack and William Bagnall of Livingston, his sister, Dodd Ann Harter of Lexington, MA, and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.
There are no funeral services.
