Carolyn Ban (1923 – 2012)
HUDSON—Carolyn Ban 89, of Hudson died Tuesday, December 4, at Columbia Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Born in Hudson, June 15, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Melnick) Karol.
On December 30, 1951, she married Louis Ban who died in 2009.
Mrs. Ban was a communicant of St. Mary’s/ Holy Trinity Parish in Hudson and greatly enjoyed nurturing her family of cats.
Survivors include: her son, Gary L. Ban of Hudson; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judith C. and George Pearsall of Stuyvesant, Karen M. and Jeffery Lewis of Earlton and Barbara L. Ban and her boyfriend Adam Dreher of Valatie; grandchildren, Jennifer and (Joseph) Burbas, Jeffrey Pearsall, Caroline Lewis and a great-grandson Morgan Burbas.
Funeral services were Friday, December 7 at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport, with Fr. Winston Bath officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Park Cemetery.

Sarah Burns (1936 – 2012)
SHELTON, CT—Sarah Burns, 76, passed quietly late Monday night, December 3, 2012.
She was born in Montclair, New Jersey, September 22, 1936.
Later, she moved with her family to Overbrook Farm in Riders Mills. She was a 1954 graduate of New Lebanon Central School. While raising her family she always found a way to give to the community, including several years as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and volunteering at Camp Shatamuk near Chatham. Later in life she was the first Capital District woman to become a member of Teamsters Local 294, delivering fuel oil to the north country in a semi. She was dedicated to her extended family at the Faith Love Fellowship of Rensselaer.
Mrs. Burns was predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth Knowlton Babcock, and sister, Alexis Edmister. She is survived by her husband, Bob Burns; brothers, Lewis Babcock and David Babcock; sister, Marilew Lord; children, John B. Warner, III, Sarah E. Bourne, Matthew Lewis Warner and David C. Warner; grandchildren, Jessica B. Warner, John B. Warner, IV, Cara-Anne Warner, David Perkins Bourne and Timothy Lewis Warner.
Family and friends attended services from the Wenk Funeral Home, 21 Payn Avenue, Chatham, Saturday, December 8, 2012. Interment followed at the Old Chatham Union Cemetery, Shaker Museum Road, Old Chatham.

Thomas H. Smith, Sr. (1928 – 2012)
VALATIE—Thomas H. Smith, Sr., founder and president of Smith Control Systems in Ghent died Sunday, December 2 at his home in Valatie.
Born in Hudson, February 27, 1928, he was the son of James G. and Fabiola (Girard) Smith.
Mr. Smith attended Hudson City Schools and Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. After being discharged from the Navy, he then joined the Merchant Marines. After his services to his country, he worked at the Gifford Wood Company in Hudson for 21 years. Mr. Smith founded his own company, Smith Control Systems, Inc., in 1972. His work allowed him to travel extensively around the world. He had an adventurous life and he lived it to the fullest.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Bette Turok) Smith; two daughters, Michelle Smith Hoffmann (Christopher) and Susan Smith Robinson, (Clay); one son, Thomas H. Smith, Jr.; seven grandchildren, Leslie Robinson Polsinello (Matt), Seth Robinson,(Jamileh), Kyle Hoffman Stine (Patrick), Benjamin Hoffmann, Ryan, Blake and Jordan Smith; a brother, Arthur G. Smith (Loraine); four sisters, Joan Connor (John), Maude Palen (Vernon), Nancy Battistello and Mary Ann Horner (Harold). He was predeceased by one brother, James G. Smith, Jr. There will be no calling hours and cremation to be private. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

William H. Brown (1930 – 2012)
STUYVESANT—William Harold Brown, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Stuyvesant surrounded by his family, Friday, December 7, 2012.
He was born in Buffalo, to Leo V. and Irma Brown, August 12, 1930.
After graduating from Canisius College, he began a successful career in the truck leasing industry founding the Leroy Holding Company.
He is survived by his loving wife, Isabell with whom he shared 59 years of blissful marriage; his daughters, Cynthia A. Jackson (Doctor William) and Barbara L. Utter (Albert Utter); grandchildren, William J. Carson, Ashley L. Carson and Alexa R. Jackson; a sister, Irma Royal of Shawnee, KA, and brother, Francis Brown of Bull Shoals, AK. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters all of Buffalo.
A mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 10 at the St. John the Baptist Church, 1025 Kinderhook Street, Valatie. Private interment will be held in Buffalo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN.
