Ronald Leggett, Sr. (1934 – 2012)
PHILMONT—Ronald Willis Leggett, Sr., 78, of Ghent died Monday, September 17 at Pine Haven Nursing Home.
He was born February 7, 1934. Mr. Leggett is survived by: five children, Ronald W. Leggett, Jr., of Ghent, Lorrie L. Leggett of Mayfield, Scott J. Leggett of Ghent, Matthew D. Leggett of Reading, PA, Shelly Mann of Hudson; sisters, Deborah Gardner of Troy, Helen Gregory of Claverack; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Edward Winfield (1949 – 2012)
ALBANY—Edward Lee Winfield, 63, of Hudson, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at St. Peter’s Hospital .
Born March 23, 1949 in Dinwiddie, Virginia, he is the beloved son of Edward and Maggie (Robinson) Winfield.
Mr. Winfield worked as a delivery person for Columbia Beer Distributors and Towne & Country Distributors. He also worked at Sterling Winthrop.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by: three daughters, Lizann Loheit, Tanisha Loheit and Misty Winfield; two sons, Thomas Confer and Isaiah Jones; eight grandchildren; five siblings, Johnny Winfield, Maggie Marie Winfield, Melvin Winfield, Alicia Winfield and Sheena White; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were Saturday, September 15 at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Burial was at the convenience of the family.
Herbert P. Monthie (1924 – 2012)
JEFFERSON, WI—Herbert P. Monthie died September 18, 2012, just shy of his 88th birthday at Alden Estates Nursing Home, having spent most of his years a resident of Claverack.
He was a graduate of Hudson City High School and Cornell University.
He was the beloved husband of the late Catherine A. (Heins) Monthie.
Mr. Monthie served in the U.S. Marines 4th Division in the Pacific Ocean Theatre of World War II and fought at Iwo Jima, Tinian, Roi-Namur and Saipan.
He was a gifted baritone player and a member of the Cornell marching band and the Ghent Band. He was a past president of the DHIA, the local
Cooperative Extension Service, Farm Bureau and the Claverack Agway Cooperative. For more than 30 years, he served as president of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Hudson, now St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed and was a faithful member for much of his life.
In 2007, he moved to be nearer to his daughter Carol, who was devoted to him in his final years. He operated Cedar Crest Dairy Farm and was known for introducing innovative farming techniques.
For many years, he delivered bread to the disadvantaged in the community and performed many other acts of kindness and charity for people in need. He was well-known for his great love of God, family and country. He used his tenor voice to grace many an occasion and was well-known for his rendition, “If I had but fifty cents.”
Mr. Monthie was the youngest of the six children of John and Bertha (Hennig) Monthie.
He will be remembered by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and extended family for his devotion to God, his ready smile, his humor, his care for his family and his generosity. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by: his beloved children, Hope R. (Jim) Bourman, Jane B. (Dave) Tilly, Stephen P. (Laura) Monthie, Carol M. (Fred) Luehring and Andrew H. (Bev) Monthie; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and his brother-in-law, John A. (Sue) Heins.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Bates and Anderson Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson on Saturday, September 22, 2012 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 8 Storm Avenue, Hudson.
Interment will follow the service at Mellenville Union Cemetery, Philmont.
Clara M. Sherman (1917 – 2012)
GREENPORT—Clara M. (Hobbie) Sherman, 95, of Greenport, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at her home.
Born January 15, 1917 in Glenco Mills, she was the daughter of the late Lillian and George Hobbie.
Mrs. Sherman was a family care provider for 20 years. She was a very caring person and always put everyone else first.
She is survived by: her daughter, Clara (Candy) Witko of Greenport; a grandson, Scott Witko of Hudson; a granddaughter, Tracey Daniels of Philmont; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Witko of Hudson and Jonathan, Jason, Joseph and Jordon Daniels, all of Philmont; and her sister, Frances Johnson of Claverack. She had one true friend who was always there for her, Doreen Kosnick of Hudson.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Sherman.
There will be no calling hours. Services are at the convenience of the family.
