Nancy Griffing (1931 – 2012)
PHILMONT—Nancy Tolley Griffing passed on in the early hours of September 4. She was 81.
Born June 3, 1931 in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the eldest daughter of the Reverend George H. and Dorothy S. Tolley.
She grew up in St. Louis, MO, Minneapolis, MN and Jamestown, and attended Allegheny College, PA, graduating with a BA in English. From 1963 until her death, she lived in Palisades and then Upper Grandview. For many years she worked at the National Council of Churches and then as executive secretary to two presidents of Teacher’s College in New York City. She married her first husband, Dana K. Mooring, in 1954. They separated in 1965. She was married to Fred Griffing in 1973. The church was a focal point throughout her life and she was a longtime member of the Palisades Presbyterian Church, faithfully singing in the choir and volunteering at many events. She and Fred had a special love for New England, especially the coast of Maine, Massachusetts to attend Tanglewood and community theater, and Vermont for cross-country skiing. In earlier years, she and Fred spent much time sailing or being near the ocean. Mrs. Griffing loved theater and music, and when her children were little she introduced them to rich, cultural experiences, passing her passion on to them. She was a voracious reader and also loved being with friends and family. Mrs. Griffing would break into song and dance (mostly the Charleston!), for no particular reason, expressing her goofier side (and passed that on, as well). She was brave, kind and compassionate, always willing to lend a hand or listen. The world is a little sadder for her passing.
She leaves behind: her beloved husband, Fred; her sister, Dorothy Morgan of Burnsville, NC; her children, Robin Mooring of Claverack and Michael Mooring of San Diego, CA; daughter-in-law, Emma; grandchildren, Katrin, Laila, Bekkie and Timmy, and her great grandson, Turner.
The family thanks the aides, nurses, staff and other residents of Pine Haven Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Philmont. “You made her feel welcomed, loved and a part of your extended family. We are so grateful.”
A celebration of her life will take place in Claverack and a memorial service at the Palisades Presbyterian Church in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Sunshine Club at Pine Haven Home, P.O. Box 785, Philmont 12565.
