Jean Shanahan (1964 – 2012)
ELIZAVILLE—Jean F. Shanahan, PhD, 48, of Elizaville passed away Friday, August 17, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was a graduate of Stissing Mountain High School and earned her BA degree in geography from the State University at Albany, and a master’s in public administration from Marist College.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Mrs. Shanahan studied holistic nutrition and received her PhD from Clayton College. Her passion for learning and reading was never satisfied.
Mrs. Shanahan began working for the Town of Poughkeepsie as a land use planner and worked for the New York State Department of Transportation as an analyst since 1994. She received numerous awards and promotions during her career.
In addition to her career, Mrs. Shanahan enjoyed a full-life with her family and community. She was an active member of Christ Church, Red Hook, served on the Town Planning Board and was an active Toastmaster and club founder. Mrs. Shanahan was recognized as YWCA Women of the Year, Distinguished Toastmaster in 2006, and as 2006 Engineer of the Year from the New York State Association of Transportation Engineers. Her love of nature kept her busy running and exercising even as she continued treatments for her illness.
She was born March 12, 1964 in Sharon, CT, to Nancy (Joys) and the late Thomas Crown, who passed away July 19, 2012.
She is survived by the family she loved dearly; her husband, Michael F. Shanahan, whom she married December 15, 1984; her mother and step-father, Nancy and Richard Westover of Dardanelle, AR; her step-mother, Helen Crown; two sisters, Nancy and Philip Williams of Camden and Kathleen Crown of Orlando, FL. She is also survived by her step-brothers and sisters; Tim and Liz Brown, Richard and Michelle Westover, Allison and Ken Johnston and Kim Kennedy; mother-in-law, Ruth Mathewson; brothers-in-law, Donald and Brian Shanahan.
Mrs. Shanahan or “BeanBean” as he called her, was very close and will be dearly missed by her nephew, Alex Williams; as well as Nicole (Eugene) Kolankowsky; Kat (Clint) Proper; Matthew Kennedy; Jack Johnston; Quinlan Westover; Abby Westover; Alex, Jeremy, Noah and Lilly Brown.
“I tried to enjoy my life and just accept the downs and live each day in spite of them, perhaps to spite them! Life was truly good. See you in heaven…, “Mrs. Shanahan is quoted as saying.
Calling hours are Saturday, August 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home, 7749 Route 82, Pine Plains. Funeral services are Saturday, 1:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 7423 South Broadway, Red Hook. Interment will be private in the Livingston Cemetery, Livingston.
Memorial donations may be made to a scholarship to be established at the Pine Plains High School in Mrs. Shanahan’s memory. The scholarship will be awarded to a runner who is “not the fastest kid, or the smartest kid, but one like me!” Contributions may be sent to Michael F. Shanahan, 1563 Route 19, Elizaville 12523.
Carl Boyce (1920 – 2012)
HUDSON—Carl Vernon Boyce, 91, of Hudson and Stuart, FL, died Saturday August 18, 2012 at Columbia Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Rittman, OH, November 19, 1920, he was the son of the late Edgar and Anna Viola (Duskey) Boyce.
Mr. Boyce is survived by this wife of 69 years, Wanda Waters Boyce; a daughter, Pamela Boyce Kline; a son, Carl E. Boyce; four grandchildren, Travis Kline, Elizabeth Kline Murphy, Peter Nack and Robbie Nack and four great grandchildren, Gavin and Tait Kline, and Easton and Braden Murphy.
An outstanding athlete, Mr. Boyce played football for both Wooster College and Ohio State. He served as a captain in the Army from 1942 to 1946 in World War II in Italy and North Africa. After the war, he continued his education at the University of Maryland and Cornell. From 1949 to 1965 Mr. Boyce managed KB Products in Hudson. In subsequent years, he created and managed canneries in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Ecuador and Costa Rica. He was an adviser to AMCESA, American Mushroom Corporation Central American Division and was well-respected in the industry.
Mr. Boyce was an avid golfer, fisherman, and above all, a gentleman. He was a member of the Columbia Golf and Country Club, American Legion Post #62, the Elks, the Masons, the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, the Claverack Fire Company, the Society for the Prevention of Horse Thieves, and attended Christ Episcopal Church.

Barbara Gallo-Dollner (1950 – 2012)
HUDSON—Barbara Gallo-Dollner, 62, of Hudson, passed away Saturday August 18, 2012 at home.
She was born May 3, 1950, in Schenectady to the late Benjamin and Genevieve Haigh.
After graduation from Hudson High School in 1968, Ms. Gallo-Dollner married and started a family. She was employed as a florist, eventually opening her own shop, Gallo’s Flower Cart in Hudson. After selling her business, Ms. Gallo-Dollner retired and moved to South Carolina and then to The Villages in Florida and eventually returned home to be with family.
She was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by two loving children: daughter, Elissa Wells and son-in-law, Paul; son, John Gallo and daughter-in-law, Patrizia; the lights of her life, three grandchildren, Nicholas Gallo, Nathan Gallo and Jacob Wells; her siblings, Thomas Haigh of Hudson, Benjamin Haigh (Michele) of Spokane, WA, John Haigh (Shanna) of Waco, TX, Margaret Thomas of Hudson, Denise Vertetis (Michael) of Hudson, Robin Merante (Peter) of Hudson and Craig Haigh (Sandy) of Hudson.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 22 at the Bates and Anderson Funeral Home. Viewing hours are that day between noon and 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill 12414.
Charity Roth (1914 – 2012)
ALBANY—Charity M. Roth, 98, of Albany, passed away peacefully, August 19, 2012 with her family by her side.
She was born in Phoenix, May 5, 1914, the daughter of George and Alma (Pitcher) Mace.
Ms. Roth was passionate about education and graduated with a master’s degree in library sciences from the New York State College for Teachers (now known as the State University at Albany) in 1935. She completed her student teaching at the Milne School in Albany and went to work for the New York State Department of Education. She later returned to the State University at Albany, where she worked as a librarian until her retirement
in 1980.
Being a well-read, Ms. Roth was an active member of the Pine Hills Fortnightly Club. She also studied Russian and taught English to Russian immigrants. After her retirement, she spent much of her time helping friends and family and volunteering for the American Red Cross. She loved to garden, watch art films and entertain. She also loved animals and donated to several animal organizations over the years.
Ms. Roth was predeceased by her two sisters, Vivian Spencer of Phoenix and Ariel Gardiner of Texas, and her brother Richard Mace of Binghamton.
Survivors include: her son, William, son of Florian Roth, and his wife Joan of Chatham Center; two grandchildren and their spouses, James Roth and his wife Stacey of North Chatham and Wendy Nooney and her husband Aaron of Albany; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Christina and Brandon Roth of North Chatham; two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Red Cross and the Mohawk-Hudson Humane Society.
Frank Whithem, Sr. (1945 – 2012)
ALBANY—Frank C. Whithem, Sr., 67, of Hudson died Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Albany Medical Center.
He was born May 12, 1945 in Rhinebeck, the son of the late Frank and Ann (Whithem) Kelsey.
Mr. Whithem worked at Allied Healthcare in Stuyvesant Falls for many years and more recently for Smith Controls in West Ghent.
He is survived by: a daughter, Tamara Whithem of Lansing, MI; a son, Frank C. Whithem, Jr., of Summerfield, FL; seven brothers and sisters, Eddie, Frank, Ronnie, Raymond, Clifford, Becky and Janice and a grandson, Ryan T. Whithem.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, August 23 in West Ghent Cemetery with the Reverend Nancy McClure officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 22, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie. Mr. Whithem “is now off to see his loving wife Paulette.”
