Steffania Heermance, 89, pocketbook factory worker, auxilian

LIVINGSTON—Steffania Heermance of Hudson died Thursday, January 26 at Livingston Hills Nursing Home in Livingston. She was 89.

Born in Ghent, December 26, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Marcella Yakman.


She was married to Harold James Heermance, who died in 1981. Mrs. Heermance was a 45-year employee of Kadin Bros. Pocketbook Factory in Hudson. She was the longest active and a life-member of the V.F.W. Post #1314 Ladies Auxiliary in Hudson.

She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and canning fruits and vegetables for her family. She was a member of the former Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Churches in Hudson.

Surviving her are: sons, Fred Felter and John Heermance; daughters, Steffanie and (William) Dallas, Alice Rote, Anna and (William) Kraft, Kathryn and (Daniel) Davis; sister, Anna Yakman; grandchildren, Bill, Tamela, Rhonda, Fred, Desiree, Daniel, Harold, Laura and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Ryan, Justin, Joshua, Jacob, Savannah, Terrence, Daniel, Michael, Lillian and Cameron.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Harold James Heermance in 1956, also two brothers, Charles and William Yakman.

Calling hours will be Sunday, January 29, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 30, 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Franc Richardson of Cornerstone Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Cedar Park Cemetery.

Elaine Slater, 74, loved animals and children

ANCRAM—Elaine J. “Nana” Slater, 74, of Ancram passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at her residence.

She was born August 27, 1937 in Montville, NJ, a daughter of Henry G. and Frances A. (Werner) Burghardt.

She was previously been employed by Taconic Orchards.

Mrs. Slater was a lover of animals, and well-known locally for raising and nurturing many local children throughout her lifetime. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include: her husband, Frederick M. Slater of Ancram; a daughter, Wanda Anderson of Stuyvesant; granddaughter, Andrea Dunn of Germantown and her great grandchild, Adrianna Dunn.

She also leaves her canine companion, Peanut.

A Memorial Gathering and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ancram Firehouse to which family and friends are invited.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial offerings may be made to Mrs. Slater’s family for distribution to her favorite causes.

Clara Swiercz, 89, homemaker, singer, dancer

GREENPORT—Clara H. Swiercz, 89, of Greenport, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born May 27, 1922 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Franciszek and Helen Bonczek.

Mrs. Swiercz was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She worked in the housekeeping department at the Firemen’s Home for many years. She was an accomplished singer and loved dancing, especially polka. Mrs. Swiercz was an avid gardener and loved to crochet for her family and friends.

She is survived by: her devoted daughters, Jadwiga Goss and Wanda Krukowska, both of Greenport, and Hanna Psczowska, and her husband, Lesczek, of Poland; her brother, Stanley Bonczek of Claverack; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Swiercz, and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Friday, January 27 at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson. Arrangements were with the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.

Burial was in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Eileen Abrams, 95, church member

OLD FORGE, PA—Eileen V. Abrams, 95, a former resident of Copake, passed away Monday January 23, 2012 at her daughter’s home in Old Forge, PA.

Mrs. Abrams was born April 25, 1916 in Brooklyn.

She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Copake Falls.

Friends may call Saturday January 28, 2012 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Chapel of Our Lady of Hope.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon with the Reverend George Brennan officiating.

Interment will follow in new St. Bridget’s Cemetery.
