Obituaries: Barden, Decker, Hill, O’Dell


Edna Barden, 87, clerk, musician

PHILMONT—Edna M. Barden of Philmont died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont. She was 87.

Born in Hudson, March 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Leona (Akin) Moore.


Mrs. Barden was a graduate of Philmont High School and was a clerk with the Philmont Pharmacy as well as Grand Union in Philmont. She was a member of the Second Reformed Church of Claverack, the church choir and sewing bee. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines singing group and traveled with them throughout the state, in addition Mrs. Barden enjoyed playing piano and organ.

She will be greatly missed by her husband of 68 years, Paul W. Barden, whom she married September 19, 1943. She is also survived by: her children, Mary Jeanne (John) Hoose of Philmont, Frances (Charles) Wullard of Livingston, Donna (Willard) Klima of Copake and Richard (Karen) Barden of Albany; one sister Barbara Oles of Philmont; and 27 grand and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one grandson, Tim Klima in 2002.

Funeral services were Friday, December 2 at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport, with Pastor Dan Herrick of the Second Reformed Church of Claverack officiating.

Burial followed in Mellenville Union Cemetery.

Tracy Decker, 36, teacher’s aide, mother

HUDSON—Tracy L. Decker, 36, of Hudson, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born March 6, 1975 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Johanna (Coons) and Peter Decker, Sr. of Hudson.

Ms. Decker was a teacher’s aide for the Hudson City School District.  Surviving are: her three children, Amber and Xzavier Smith and Austin Decker, all of Hudson; her brother, Peter, Jr. of Stottville; her sister, Tina Mossman of Greenport; and many nieces and nephews.

Harold Hill, Sr., 82, car enthusiast, custodian

PHILMONT—Harold B. Hill Sr., 82, of Pine Plains passed away Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Pine Haven Nursing Home.

He was born May 9, 1929 in Gallatin, the son of the late Robert and Laura (Kilmer) Hill.

On September 5, 1948 in Gallatin, he married Kathaleen O’Grady. She survives him at home.

Mr. Hill attended Pine Plains Schools.

He worked as a custodian for 14 years at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, and previously spent many years in the grocery business.

Mr. Hill was an avid car enthusiast.

In addition to his loving wife, Kathaleen, he is survived by: his children, Harold B. Hill, Jr. and his wife Dorothy Lutz of Pine Plains, June Dykeman and her husband Charles of Pine Plains, and Jean Johnson and her husband Richard of Pine Plains; three grandchildren, Melissa Bowen, Richard Johnson, Jr. and Donald Thorpe, Jr.; four great grandchildren, Kayla and Kelsey Bowen, Brian Johnson and Michael Calabrese; a brother, Melvin Hill and his wife Edith of Staatsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Petty, and by two brothers, Howard Hill and Robert Hill, Jr.

Calling hours will be held Monday, December 5, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 7749 South Main Street, Pine Plains.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 6, 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Reverend Bill Mayhew officiating.

Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Joseph O’Dell, 56, truck driver, NASCAR fan

ALBANY—Joseph E. O’Dell, a lifelong resident of Chatham, passed away December 2, 2011 with his loving family by his side at the Stratton VA Medical Center.

He was born September 19, 1955 in Hudson, the son of the late Lewis and Jean Clegg O’Dell.

He was a graduate of Chatham High School and went on to serve in the US Air Force, stationed in Knobnoster, MO.

He was employed with Albany Transport as a truck driver, a profession he dearly loved. Mr. O’Dell was an avid NASCAR fan and a member of the American Legion

He is survived by: his wife, Linda Whiffen O’Dell of Chatham; his children, Jeffery of Chilhowee, MO, Kristin, Joseph (Jake) and Megan all of Chatham; two brothers, Wayne of Ghent and Richard of Chatham; and one sister, Katherine Laurange of Chatham; two nephews, Steven Laurange and Erik O’Dell of Chatham; a niece, Samantha O’Dell of Chatham; and a great nephew and niece.

Family will receive friends at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham, Tuesday, December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a service Wednesday, December 7, 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Attendees should arrive at 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at the Spencertown Cemetery.
