Dr. Norman Scheibling, 79, pediatrician, re-specialized in insurance medicine
SPRINGFIELD, IL—Dr. Norman John Scheibling, 79, of Springfield, died at 11:38 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2011 at St. John’s Hospice surrounded by his wife and daughters.
He was born January 10, 1932 in New York City, the son of the late John and Hedwig Rose Scheibling.
On July 4, 1958, he married his long-time sweetheart and best friend, Barbara Stickel of Somerset, PA.
Dr. Scheibling was a graduate of A.B. Davis High School in Mt. Vernon. He received his BA degree from Yale University in 1953 and MD degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA in 1957. His internship took place at Albany Medical Center in Albany and his residency in pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He served a tour of active duty with the US Air Force as a captain, retired as a major in 1961 and served as the airbase pediatrician. He was licensed to practice medicine in Illinois, North Carolina and Mississippi. After achieving his goals in pediatrics, he re-specialized in insurance medicine and became board certified in life insurance medicine and was employed by the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company in Greensboro, NC, where he was active in the medical society. Subsequently, he was employed with Franklin Life Insurance Company in Springfield in 1967 and became vice president and medical director. In 1966, Dr. Scheibling became diplomat of the Board of Life Insurance Medicine. He was a member and delegate of AMA, the Sangamon County Medical Society and the Illinois State Medical Society of which he became president. He was a member of the Economic Council–Illinois State Medical Society, as well as its chairman; also the Association of Life Insurance Medical Directors. He served in many offices, including president of the Illinois Heart Association, Springfield Medical Club, Sangamon County Medical Society and Midwest Medical Directors Association. Dr. Schiebling was a delegate to the Illinois State Medical Association and past chairman of the Foundation of Medical Care of Central Illinois and was a member of the Board of Managers–Medical Section–American Council of Life Insurance and an alternate delegate from Illinois to the American Medical Association. He also served as faculty member-Triennial Course–Board of Insurance Medicine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Nicholas Burford.
He is survived by: his wife of more than 54 years, Barbara Scheibling of Springfield; two daughters, Susan (husband, David) Burford of Parkville, MO and Cindy (husband, Dennis) O’Keefe of Kennesaw, GA; four grandchildren, Christopher and Samantha Burford and Kaitlyn and Shannon O’Keefe; and one brother, Evan Scheibling of New York.
The funeral ceremony was Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 2941 South Koke Mill Road, Springfield, with Dr. Roger Ross officiating.

Robert C. Snow, Jr., 79, contractor, Air Force vet
HUDSON—Robert C. Snow, Jr., 79, of Chatham died Sunday, October 23 at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
He was born November 7, 1931 in Hillsdale, the son of the late Robert C. and Wilhelmina (VanDerBeisen) Snow, Sr.
Mr. Snow served in the U.S. Air Force and was in the contracting business for 50 years. Mr. Snow was a member and past president of the Columbia County Federation of Sportsmen. He will be remembered by many for his animal exhibit at the Columbia County Fair.
He is survived by: his wife of 36 years, Joyce (Rivenberg) Snow of Chatham; daughter, Debra Wheeler of Chatham; stepsons, Stephen Campbell of Chatham and Donald Campbell of Kinderhook; brothers, Richard Snow of Philmont, Louis Snow of Ghent; sisters, Jennie Hoyt of Ghent, Nancy Whitbeck of Glenco Mills, Joan Mottoshiski of Philmont, Jeanetta Domkoski of Chatham; two granddaughters; one great granddaughter; 14 nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 9, 7 p.m. from the Wenk Funeral Home, Chatham.
