Cora Anelle, 87, mother, grandmother
HUDSON—Cora A. Anelle 87 of Livingston died Thursday July 28, 2011 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born September 1, 1923 in Ancram, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Plank) Simmons.
Survivors include: daughters, Charlene Jennings of Germantown and Rose Marie VanWagner of Virginia; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Anthony J. Anelle, who died October 11, 2007; a son, Clarence Quick and daughter, Barbara Poucher.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home, Germantown.
Barbara Naegeli, 73, civil servant, wife, mother
GREENPORT—After a dignified struggle with cancer, Barbara Ann (Ziemba) Naegeli, 73, passed peacefully with family surrounding her, Friday, July 29, 2011.
Mrs. Naegeli was a dedicated civil servant with the Columbia County Department of Social Services and the Hudson City School District. But the work that she put her heart into was being a wife to James, and a mother to Diana (Naegeli) and Peter Kipp of Claverack and Michael and Melissa (Friss) Naegeli of Stuyvesant, and a sister to Joan Ziemba of Virginia. She continuously shared smiles, hugs, love, laughs and fun with grandsons, Jay Kipp, Alex Kipp, Stephen Naegeli, Daniel Naegeli and Andrew Naegeli and grand dog, Sweet Maggie. She was predeceased by her mother, Helen (Logan) Ziemba, her father John Ziemba and her step-mother, Francis (MacCormack) Ziemba.
An avid craftsperson, Mrs. Naegeli’s interests and hobbies were varied and included, photography, stained glass work, scrollwork, quilting, sewing and needlework. She enjoyed reading, the theater and musical concerts. She was very active in the community working with the Catholic church sodality, Bible study group, senior citizen travel and volunteering with the Salvation Army soup kitchen and in local schools. Her truest passion was spending time with and cooking for friends and family. Her sweetness, humor and special light will be a treasured memory to many.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 4 at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson.
Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Ellen Meyers, 99, teacher, caregiver
HUDSON—Ellen Downing Meyers, 99, died peacefully July 30, 2011. She was a local educator for over 30 years, as well as, a devoted mother and caregiver.
Mrs. Meyers was born June 16, 1912 in Hudson, the daughter of Florence Hardy Downing and Jeremiah Downing.
She was married for 57 years to Robert F. Meyers, former City of Hudson judge and a practicing attorney until his death in September 2000. She was also predeceased by her brother, Robert J. Downing of Allentown, Pennsylvania and Hudson.
Mrs. Meyers graduated from Albany State Teacher’s College in 1935. In 1943, she earned her master’s degree in English, also from Albany State. She continued her education throughout her teaching career, receiving post-graduate instruction at Vassar College in 1965.
Mrs. Meyers began her career in education by teaching first grade at Greenport School. Within a few years, she moved on to teach sixth, seventh and eighth grades at Greenport, during the time when the school was independent of the Hudson City School District. Following school district consolidation in 1966, she finished her career teaching at fourth grade at Greenport.
For almost 20 years, Mrs. Meyers taught a variety of junior high classes. She concentrated primarily on English, but taught geography while serving as school librarian. She earned a reputation for maintaining discipline in the classroom while trying to help each student succeed.
Mrs. Meyers retired from teaching in 1968 to become a full-time caregiver for her mother until she died in 1976. Although Mrs. Meyers continued on as a substitute teacher, she devoted most of her time to the care of others. She also continued to manage properties constructed by her father until well into her 90s.
Mrs. Meyers was active in the local community and a member of the United Methodist Church. She served on the Board of Directors for the Home for the Aged. She was also an active member of Fortnightly and the Trippers clubs. In addition, she formed her own, informal Friday Night Club.
Mrs. Meyers is survived by: her daughter, Susan M. Miller of Alexandria, VA; a son, Robert J. Meyers of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren, Lynn M. Lassiter and Daniel Miller both of Orlando, FL, and Henry S. Meyers and Kristina E. Meyers of Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Meyers recently celebrated the birth of a great-granddaughter, Ashley Ellen Lassiter.
Although Mrs. Meyers travelled domestically and internationally, she spent her entire life in Hudson. And, until her last few days, she remained in the home where she spent her early childhood. Having spent her life helping others, and being continually concerned for their wellbeing more than her own, Mrs. Meyers received assistance, love and support from other caregivers to whom her family is forever grateful.
Friends, relatives, colleagues and former students are invited to a calling hour Wednesday, August 3, 1 p.m. at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, followed by services at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
