Edith Melino, 84, cook, church member
HUDSON—Edith May “Edie” Melino of Greenport died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She was 84.
Born January 19, 1927 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah Quigley.
Mrs. Melino was a cook at Melino’s Pub in Hudson and also at Joe’s Restaurant in Greenport. She was a communicant of the Church of St. Joseph in Stottville.
She is survived by: three sons, Angelo J. Jr. (Candace) Melino of Germantown, James (Deborah) Melino of Ghent and Robert Melino of Greenport; two brothers, Tom (Marie) Quigley and Bill (Rose) Quigley; one sister, Kay Thomas; and several grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Angelo J. Melino; one brother, John Quigley; one sister, Helen Halloran and her daughter-in-law, Mary Melino.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, July 27 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the McDonald-Valenti-Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Joseph in Stottville, with Father Frank O’Connor officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany 12205 or to Community Hospice, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill.
John Atwater, Jr., 57, carpenter, sports fan
PITTSFIELD- John H. “John Boy” Atwater, Jr., 57, of Pomeroy Avenue died on Saturday morning, July 23 at Berkshire Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Pittsfield, MA, February 19, 1954, he was the son of the late John H. and Lois M. Swisher Atwater. He was the loving husband of the former Ellen Hayford, whom he married July 14, 1990 in the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield.
Mr. Atwater enjoyed and participated in a wide variety of sports throughout his youth, winning a number of Pass, Punt and Kick contests. He graduated from New Lebanon High School and played softball for the ECHO League for many years. Mr. Atwater was employed as a carpenter, builder and painter. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who had a wonderful wit and sense of humor. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan along with NASCAR and horse racing. He developed a number of online friendships playing Party Poker.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Ellen Hayford Atwater of Pittsfield; sisters, Janet Atwater, Susan Cooper (Bruce Staples) and Georgi Beebe of Stephentown; mother- and father-in-law, Donald and Florence Hayford of Pittsfield; sister-in-law Susan (Robert) Sauve of Hinsdale; brothers-in-law, Don (Catherine) Hayford and Charles Hayford of Pittsfield; loving nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; dear cousins; friends and poodles, Buddy and Princess.
His family extends heartfelt gratitude for the care given to Mr. Atwater during his illness by Dr. Thomas Dunzendorfer and his staff, the staff at the Berkshire Endoscopy Center, Berkshire Visiting Nurses Association and the nurses and doctors of the Critical Care Unit at Berkshire Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 30 at 11 a.m. in the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road, Stephentown, where family friend, the Reverend Susan Schultz will officiate. Private burial will be in Garfield Cemetery.

Barbara Moore, 56, COARC workshop employee, enjoyed music
CATSKILL—Barbara “Barby” E. Moore, 56, of Greenport, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011 at The Pines in Catskill.
Born November 8, 1954 in Hudson, she was the beloved daughter of the late Donald R. and Catherine (Nelson) Moore.
Ms. Moore was a workshop employee at COARC in Mellenville for more than 35 years. She had many friends and family in the community. She enjoyed music, dancing and drawing.
She is survived by her devoted sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Stephen Super of Greenport and many cousins.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 28 at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.
Services will be conducted Friday, July 29, 11 a.m. at the Philmont Reformed Church.
Interment will be in the Mellenville Union Cemetery.
