Cheryl Ann Allen, 56, loved animals and shopping

HUDSON—Cheryl Ann Allen passed on to heaven, eternal rest and peace at Columbia Memorial Hospital, March 18, 2011. Her loving housemother, Jan, whom she loved so much, was by her side.

Ms. Allen was born April 20, 1954.

She loved animals, shopping and family get-togethers. With her beautiful smile, she brought joy and smiles to all who knew her. Most of all, she loved spending time with her housemother Jan. Ms. Allen leaves behind friends at her COARC day program and at the Taconic DDSO.

Funeral services were March 22 at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home in Chatham.

Eleanor Delong, 84, grandmother

VALATIE—Eleanor H. Delong, 84, passed away March 11, 2011 at the Barnwell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

She was born January 5, 1927.

Survivors include: Richard and Michelle Slovak, Tami Slovak and children.

Interment was at Horizon View Cemetery in Castleton, March 15, 2011. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene counties.

Arrangements were with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.

The family of Ms. Delong thanks Albany Medical Center, Drs. Farkus and Alarcon, the Valatie Rescue Squad, the Columbia County Health Department, and Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene for the excellent care given to their grandmother during her brief illness. The family would not have gotten through this difficult time without each of you. They also thank the Bond Funeral Home.

Walter Eckel, 99, postmaster, member of many organizations

TROY—Walter Seidler Eckel, 99, of 1903 Route 203, Chatham, passed away March 18, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

He was born May 19, 1911 in East Orange, NJ, the son of Fredrick and Edith (Madison) Eckel.

Mr. Eckel was member and past warden of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Kinderhook. He retired as postmaster of the Schodack Landing Post Office in 1983. He was a charter member and past district governor of the Northern Columbia Lion’s Club, Valatie Lodge #362 of the Free and Accepted Masons, Cyprus Shiners of Albany, Columbia County Shrine Club, Capital District Clowns and member and past patron of Eda Chapter #459 of Kinderhook.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (O’Rourke) Eckel; two sons, Richard Eckel (Judy) of Mayfield and Mark Eckel (Thersea) of Hudson; daughter, Marcia Fitzgerald (Mark) of Schodack Landing; step-son, Michael Cartwright (Andrea) of Chatham; grandchildren, Nannetta Marotta (Kevin) of Claverack, Kimberly Van Allen (Paul) of Columbiaville, Meagan Fitzgerald of Albany, Maura Clos (Richard) of Oak Hill, VA, Stephanie Dunn (Chris) of Hoboken, NJ, Richard Eckel (Heidi) of Schodack Landing, Donna Ringwood (Steven) of Valatie, Donald Moore of Schodack Landing; step-grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer and Sarah Cartwright of Chatham and Rachael King of Stillwater; great grandchildren, Ashley Everett, Zachary and Tabatha Van Allen, Michaela Marotta, Jenna, Kalie, Claudia and Brianna Eckel, Carson Dunn, Baker Clos and Paige, Kaitlin and Jessie Moore.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Fredrick Eckel of Delmar, the Very Reverend Malcolm Eckel of Kennebunk, ME, John Eckel, MD, of Cortland and Robert Eckel of Troy.

Funeral services will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6 Sylvester Street, Kinderhook, March 26, 2011. The church will open at 10 a.m. and services will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Columbarium. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to St Paul’s Episcopal Church. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.
