John “Jack” McDonald, 84, co-owned funeral home

HUDSON—John F. “Jack” McDonald, 84, of Ancram, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Community Hospice in Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born in Hudson July 20, 1926, he was the son of the late William J. and Catherine (McCarthy) McDonald.

Mr. McDonald was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Hudson and was a mailman in the Navy during World War II serving in the South Pacific Theater.

Upon returning home, he was employed as a salesman with Kritzman-Maskin Clothing Store in Hudson for many years. He was also the co-owner/operator of McDonald Funeral Home in Hudson until his retirement in 1993. He continued working at the funeral home until 2004.

Mr. McDonald was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church of Holy Trinity Parish in Hudson and the former Church of the Holy Cross in West Taghkanic. He was a member of the Hudson American Legion, a life member of C.H. Evans Hook and Ladder, Hudson Elks #787 and was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus.

He is survived by sons, James F. and (Lucia) McDonald of Valatie, Timothy and (Michele) McDonald of Greenwich; one daughter, Joan and (Carmen) Nero of Taghkanic; grandchildren, Kelly, Brendan, Scott, Erin, Chris, Janine, Andrea and Maria; as well as his dear friend Julie Scofield.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his wife, Helen H. (Herishko) McDonald; one brother, Fred McDonald; sisters, Catherine Gaffney, Beatrice Whelan, Marion Kinney, Margaret  Lasher, Frances Heeney and Elizabeth Loomis.

Calling hours will be Friday, January 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McDonald-Valenti-Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, January 8, 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen Street, Hudson, with Fr. Winston Bath officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at Cedar Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Columbia Greene, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill 12414
