Natalie Houghtaling, 88, homemaker, loved Christmas

PHILMONT—Natalie C. Houghtaling, 88, of Greenport, died Friday, October 22, 2010 at Pine Haven Nursing Home.

Born in Copake on February 9, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Gussie (Lasher) Conklin.

Mrs. Houghtaling was a homemaker.

She was employed in the sewing department at the BIG A Factory in Hudson, and then in the ladies department at the Jamesway Department Store.

Mrs. Houghtaling loved the Christmas season and everything about the winter. She collected ornaments and Santa figures and enjoyed cooking, baking, flowers and writing to her pen pals around the world. She was known for her sense of humor and for her love of animals.

She was a former member of the American Legion 1314 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the VFW Post 184 Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband, Earl Houghtaling of Greenport; her daughter, Camilla Coxon of Montousville, PA; three granddaughters, Michelle Houghtaling and Doreen Laurange, both of Hudson, and Renee Coxon of PA, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Guy, Reginald, Clifton, and Willis Conklin; her sister, Hilda Middlebrook; her step-sister, Hazel Ferrera; and her step-brother, James Conklin.

A calling hour will begin at noon Wednesday, October 27 at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. the same day at the West Copake Reformed Church Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Disabled Vets, the American Heart Association, or to a Native American tribe of choice.
