Roswell Simmons, 67, Navy man, retired from IBM

ANCRAM—Roswell H. Simmons, 67 of Poole Hill Road in Ancram, a former resident of Pine Plains, passed away Monday, October 11, 2010 at his residence.

He was born October 29, 1942 in Poughkeepsie, a son of Roswell M. and Eunice (Raycraft) Simmons.

Mr. Simmons attended Pine Plains Central Schools and upon his graduation in 1960 enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17. He proudly served his country from 1960 to 1963 aboard the U.S.S. Springfield. He was trained to repair transmitters and receivers for cryptic messages and was granted top secret clearance.

He also attended Canton Agricultural & Technical College and later graduated from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.

Upon completing his military obligation, he was employed by IBM in March 1964 and retired as a senior toolmaker in 1992.

Mr. Simmons was a former member of the Pine Plains United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sunday school teacher and youth group leader. He later became affiliated with the North East Baptist Church in Millerton, serving on its Board of Trustees. Most recently, he attended the West Copake Reformed Church.

On September 5, 1964 in Canton, he married Sharon (Ames) Simmons, who survives at home. Also surviving are his children, Laurie St. Germain of Uncasville, CT, Alexander Simmons and Christopher Simmons both of Copake, and Jeffrey Simmons of Poughkeepsie. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Additionally he is survived by his siblings, John Simmons of Willsboro; Steven, Curtis and Davis Simmons all of Pine Plains, Fred Simoncini of Pine Plains, J. Peter Simmons of Stanfordville and Catherine Hay of Pine Plains. Also, several cousins, nieces and nephews survive.

Friends may call Friday, October 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22, Copake.

A Service of Remembrance will be offered Saturday, October 16, 11 a.m. at the West Copake Reformed Church, 2692 County Route 7. The Rev. Dr. Robert Charnin, pastor, will officiate.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Copake Reformed Church, 2692 County Route 7, Copake 12516.
