William Groll, 81, farmer, career at NiMo

CATSKILL—William Valentine Groll passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Kaaterskill Care Rehabilitation Center.

He was born February 11, 1929 in Greenport to the late Catherine Horan Groll and Valentine Groll.

Mr. Groll graduated from Hudson High School in the class of 1946. He worked for several years on the family farm in Greenport and then began his career at the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation.

He continued farming, hunting and net fishing throughout his life. He served as a union steward while at Niagara Mohawk, was a member of the Elks Lodge, served on the Columbia County Zoning Board and received a Conservation Farmer of the Year Award from the Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District. Following his retirement from Niagara Mohawk, Mr. Groll operated a 150-acre farm in Greenport.

Survivors include, his wife of 58 years, Margie Fahy Groll; one son, Thomas Groll and his wife Risa of Acworth, Georgia; four daughters, Maureen Johnston and her husband Claude of Pelham, Kathleen Watton of Salem, Massachusetts, Colleen Groll of Seattle, Washington, and Eileen Liponis and her husband, Steven of Brentwood, New Hampshire.

Mr. Groll enjoyed the company of his nine grandchildren, Colin, Will, Katie, Sarah, Tom Jr., Christopher, Olivia, Ava and Eliza.

Also surviving is his brother, Christopher Groll of Greenport.

He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Jennings and his brother, Fred Groll.

A Mass was conducted September 17 at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson. Burial followed at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenport.

The Groll family extends its deepest thanks to Dr. Henry Louis Clinton for his extraordinary care and friendship to Mr. Groll for so many years.

Arrangements were with the Bates and Anderson Funeral Home.
