Christine D Smith, 69, passion for dance, baker

VALATIE—Christine D. Smith passed away on July 11, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born May 28, 1941 in Schenectady, to Clem and Adele Cyka. She was an only child.
Mrs. Smith met the love of her life, Ronald Smith, in Schenectady and they married and eventually moved to Millerton, where she pursued her childhood passion for dance by opening her own dance studio. Later, they moved to Hudson and then Greenport, where Mrs. Smith was a baker for Dunkin Donuts and managed various retail stores in the area. Her last position, that of activity aide at the Firemen’s Home, was her true calling. Her positive attitude and friendly smile brought joy to many of the residents there and she got great satisfaction from brightening their days.
Mrs. Smith embraced life and had many pastimes she greatly enjoyed including being a member of the Greenport Fire District Auxiliary, shopping, trips to the casino and spending time with and cooking for her family, especially during the holidays. Even when she was not feeling well and could not fully participate, her presence during these events made them so much brighter: her passing leaves a deep sadness in the hearts of all of those who loved her so dearly and cherished her so much.
Mrs. Smith was predeceased by both her beloved husband, Ronald E. Smith and first born son, Ronald P. Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Jodie Smith and her companion R. James Skoda, Jamie Smith and her companion David Quinn and Terry Simmons and her husband Donald Simmons; a son, Brett Smith; and two grandsons who, as she would say, she loved with all of her heart, Corey Simmons and Casey Simmons.
In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law and good friend, Elaine Smith. Her loyal dog Shyann will also be among those who miss her.
Even in the face of illness, Mrs. Smith continued to make friends and share her warmth with those around her, including the members and staff at Barnwell Nursing Home where she resided. Her family would like to thank the staff at Barnwell for the many kindnesses they showed her, especially Peggy in PT and Linda, Mike and Sam on floor five. They would also like to thank Dr. A. and his staff at Pain Management at Columbia Memorial, especially Sharon, for their willingness to go above and beyond to try and help her with her illness. They would also like to thank the many friends who sent cards and came to visit Mrs. Smith during her illness, in particular Grace Sanders, who was like a sister, to find such a dear friend, even so late in life, was truly a blessing.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at Bates and Anderson Funeral Home, Hudson, Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 4 tol 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 15, 2010, 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by interment at the Reformed Dutch Cemetery in Claverack.
