Virus death toll up to 16; recommendation for no summer camps

HUDSON—Sixteen Columbia County residents have died of Covid-19 according to information provided by the Columbia County Department of Health (DOH), May 4 as of 3 p.m.

The DOH reported that two new deaths had occurred since yesterday, May 3 when the total was 14.

The county has had 226 positive cases of Covid-19 with 102 of the total cases having recovered. Currently, 12 of the positive cases are hospitalized, 4 of those hospitalized are in the ICU. The department has received 1,572 completed test results Columbia County residents; 172 residents are under mandatory quarantine and 22 under precautionary quarantine.

Columbia County officials, including those from the Department of Health, County Attorney’s Office, and Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell, have issued a strong recommendation that summer camps with children and counselors not operate during the Covid-19 crisis, according to the chairman’s May 4 Covid-19 update press release.

Chairman Murell said that the recent order from Governor Cuomo for schools to remain closed through the remainder of this school year offers strong support for the county’s decision. In late April, the county sought authority from the state DOH to issue an Executive Order closing the camps. A determination on that request has not yet been received from the state.

The chairman’s May 3 press release indicated that $1,000 had been received from Chase Bank in the county’s fight against the coronavirus. The $1,000 was actually donated by Angus Farm LLC, Ghent. The county thanks them for their donation.

Anyone who wants to donate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as N95 masks, face shields, and gowns, are advised to contact the Emergency Management Office at 518-828-1212. If there is no answer, leave a message and someone will return the call.

Food donations should be directed to the county Office for the Aging 518-828-4258 and local pantries.

Monetary donations for the purchase of much-needed equipment for emergency responders, medical personnel and others on the front lines of the coronavirus fight can be sent via check in care of Columbia County, with coronavirus noted in the memo field. Mail the check to the Columbia County Controller’s Office, 401 State Street, Hudson 12534. All money received is being placed in a dedicated account.

A hotline has been established for the elderly and vulnerable in the county, including those with medical conditions or who are disabled and would welcome a deputy checking on their well-being on a daily basis. The number for the hotline is 518-828-0601 X 1400.

Brehan Stannard, 33, of Greenville, was arrested March 11 at 5:32 p.m. in Cairo and charged with driving while intoxicated, an unclassified misdemeanor. Stannard was released to a third party.
Johnae Marie Simpson, 20, of Kingston, was arrested March 11 at 7:31 p.m. in Coxsackie and charged with second-degree introduction of contraband into a prison, a class A misdemeanor. Simpson’s arrest status was not reported.
Victoria Adams-Marchant, 20, of Albany, was arrested March 11 at 7:32 p.m. in Coxsackie and charged with second-degree introduction of contraband into a prison, a class A misdemeanor. Adams-Marchant was issued an appearance ticket.
Stephanie Marie Haines, 28, of Elizaville, was arrested March 11 at 11:01 a.m. in Windham and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol content over 0.08% and driving while intoxicated, both unclassified misdemeanors. Haines’s arrest status was not reported.
Evan Reihl, 19, of Greenville, was arrested March 12 at 8:40 p.m. in Cairo and charged with sixth-degree conspiracy, a class B misdemeanor. Reihl was issued an appearance ticket.
Brandon Maldonado, 20, of Selkirk, was arrested March 12 at 8:26 p.m. in Cairo and charged with second-degree robbery, a class D attempted felony; two counts of criminal mischief with intent to damage property, class A misdemeanors; and third-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury and sixth-degree conspiracy, both class B misdemeanors. Maldonado was released on his own recognizance.
Brandon Gambino, 33, of Saugerties, was arrested March 13 at 8:35 p.m. in Catskill and charged with falsely reporting to law enforcement an incident that did not occur, a class A misdemeanor. Gambino was issued an appearance ticket.
Dana Higginbotham, 36, of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, was arrested March 14 at 12:18 a.m. in Catskill and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, manufacture of drug-related paraphernalia and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, all class A misdemeanors. Higginbotham was issued an appearance ticket.
Austin Mansfield, 27, of Catskill, was arrested March 14 at 2:22 p.m. in Catskill and charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony. Mansfield was issued an appearance ticket.
Benjamin McBain, 41, of Cairo, was arrested March 15 at 3:20 p.m. in Cairo and charged with two counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child, a class A misdemeanor. McBain was issued an appearance ticket.
Jose Burgos, 33, of Coxsackie, was arrested March 17 at 11:30 a.m. in Cairo and charged with first-degree knowingly introducing dangerous contraband into a prison, a class D felony. Burgos was held on no bail.
John Caltabiano, 55, of Catskill, was arrested March 16 at 4:50 p.m. in Cairo and charged with six counts of first-degree falsifying business records, a class E felony; three counts of fifth-degree health care fraud, a class A misdemeanor; and three counts of obtaining controlled substance/prescription by fraud, a class A misdemeanor. Caltabiano’s arrest status was not reported.
Matthew DeQuarto, 23, of Rosendale, was arrested March 17 at 3:51 a.m. in Greenville and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a class E felony, and operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, an unclassified misdemeanor. DeQuarto’s arrest status was not reported.
