HUDSON—The Columbia County coronavirus death toll remained at 32 as of Memorial Day, May 25 at 11:30 a.m.
According to figures from the Columbia County Department of Health (DOH) for the day, there have been 381 positive cases of Covid-19 with 156 active cases currently; 71 additional residents are on mandatory quarantine and 4 residents are on precautionary quarantine.
So far, 193 of the 381 total cases have recovered from the virus; 16 of the positive cases are hospitalized, 1 of those hospitalized is in the ICU. The DOH has received 4,626 completed test results for Columbia County residents.
Chairman honors the fallen
In the Memorial Day county-issued Covid-19 update press release, Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell said, “On this day, when we pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country, I would ask everyone to take the time to honor the memory of those individuals.
“Last year, I was granted the privilege of speaking at the Memorial Day commemoration ceremonies at the Chatham Rural Cemetery. On that solemn occasion, part of what I said was this regarding those fallen veterans: Let’s think about what that time of service meant to each individual. Some entered the service and headed into war before they had even graduated from high school. Others left wives, young children, and established jobs. No matter the circumstances, they all left home unsure of whether or not they would return to their families.
“With their effort and dedication to a cause bigger than themselves, each and every one of them contributed to this great country. Please hold them in your thoughts,” the chairman said.

*Family Assistance Network: As part of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, Columbia County Emergency Management has asked leaders in the human services and spiritual areas of the community for help. These individuals have formed a Family Assistance Network to provide information to assist county residents who may be dealing with someone close to them who passed away as a result of the coronavirus. *Hotline for Elderly and Vulnerable: Columbia County Sheriff David Bartlett has established a hotline for the elderly and vulnerable, including those with medical conditions or who are disabled, who would welcome a deputy checking on their well-being on a daily basis.
