NEW BALTIMORE — State police have released more details on the fatal crash that took place on Route 9W on Wednesday.

Charles Woullard, 90, and Frances Woullard, 76, both of Hudson, died in the crash, state police said Thursday morning.

The accident occurred around 10:11 a.m. on Route 9W, approximately 3/10 of a mile north of Route 144 in the town of New Baltimore. Two vehicles were involved in the head-on collision.

“Investigation revealed that a 2014 Dodge pick-up truck operated by William Steele, age 31, from Hannacroix, New York, was traveling southbound on state Route 9W when he drove into the northbound lane to pass traffic that had slowed down,” according to a statement from state police. “He struck a 2014 Dodge Caravan head-on that was traveling in the northbound lane.”

Charles Woullard was driving the Dodge Caravan. He and his wife, Frances Woullard, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Steele was taken to Albany Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
