NEW BALTIMORE — A multi-vehicle crash on the New York State Thruway sent two to the hospital with serious injuries Wednesday evening, according to New York State Police.
The accident occurred Dec. 28 at around 5:38 p.m. on the Thruway in New Baltimore.
According to a preliminary investigation, an oversized flatbed tractor-trailer carrying 197,000 pounds of crane equipment became disabled while it was partially in the right lane between exits 21B in Coxsackie and 21A on the Berkshire Spur.
A certified escort vehicle — and SUV — was traveling with the tractor trailer and the driver positioned it behind the flatbed with lights activated to warn approaching vehicles there was a hazard in the road, according to state police.
“A minivan traveling southbound struck the SUV from behind, pinning it between the guardrail and the tractor trailer,” according to a statement from state police. “Two occupants of the SUV became entrapped and subsequently were transported to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries.”
The names of the two people injured in the incident were not released by police.
The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the minivan were not injured in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
