ATHENS — A crash of a large passenger van on the New York State Thruway sent 13 people to area hospitals Wednesday night, according to state police.
State police responded to reports of a crash Wednesday at around 9:30 p.m. on the Thruway in the southbound lanes in the vicinity of Exit 21B, in the town of Athens.
“The preliminary investigation determined that the 14-passenger van lost control, struck a guiderail and rolled over,” according to a statement from state police. “There were a total of 13 passengers and a driver in the van at the time of the crash.”
All 13 passengers were transported to area hospitals, including three with serious injuries to Albany Medical Center. Ten were brought to other local hospitals with minor injuries, according to police.
The driver of the van was not injured.
The Thruway was closed at Exit 21B. The investigation is ongoing, state police said.
