CANAAN–Officials from the Towns of Canaan and New Lebanon met with representatives from the State Department of Transportation Region 8 office recently to discuss plans for what the local officials said would be milling and resurfacing of Route 22 from Peaceful Valley Road in Canaan to the intersection at Route 20 in New Lebanon, a distance of close to 10 miles.
The towns were told that the project planned being launched this year will mill–remove road surface–to a depth of just three 3 inches and is a short-term fix.
In the view of one participant who declined to be identified in this story, the state agency is “kicking the can down the road” with a partial fix, spending $500,000 on two miles north and two miles south of the intersection of Routes 22 and 295. Local officials estimate that repairing four miles of Route 22 in the two towns for the long term would cost about $4 million, which would work out to roughly $1 million per mile.
The DOT Region 8 priority in 2019 is to redo of the road and bridge off the I-90, B3 Exit in Canaan. The surface put on one year ago is inadequate for use by heavy trucks going to and from the new Love Truck Stop. Both the bridge and road are being redone.
Contacted by email after the meeting Heather M. Pillsworth, DOT public information officer for the Hudson Valley Region, provided the following statement: “We continue to monitor and address the conditions of Route 22 to ensure safety and will consider additional work as part of the development of the next DOT capital plan.”
