Power pole damaged by wind in W. GhentChip Moon

West Ghent firefighters and State Police stood by at the intersection of Routes 66 and 9H, Claverack, when a power pole was compromised during Monday afternoon’s storm. High winds and heavy rain blew through Columbia County contributing to downed trees and power lines causing local power outages.

A West Ghent firefighter communicated by cell phone as the north section of Route 66 was closed off. Dunkin Donuts shift leader Jean Olderich, who was working the drive-through at the intersection convenience station at the time said, “The trees were blowing in two different directions at the same time due to a high constant wind.” Ms. Olderich took the storm in stride, noting, “I grew up in Illinois so tornadoes are nothing new for me.”
