Columbia Memorial offers free prostate screening

HUDSON–This is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Columbia Memorial Hospital will host a free prostate screening Tuesday, September 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. in suite 190 of the Hudson River Bank & Trust Foundation Medical Office Building, 71 Prospect Avenue.

Men interested in receiving a free screening must call 518 822-8741 to schedule an appointment with a Columbia Memorial prostate cancer specialist.

The American Cancer Society reports that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., where each year 29,720 men die from the disease, including 1,770 deaths in New York state.

Men between the ages of 50 to 65 are particularly at risk of developing prostate cancer and are encouraged to be screened for the disease.

Columbia Memorial Hospital Urologist Dr. Daniel Melamed said in the press release announcing the screening that in the earliest stages there may be no symptoms associated with prostate cancer but over time the cancer may mimic symptoms of an enlarged prostate, including urinary retention in advanced cases; others symptoms may include back pain or kidney failure.

“What’s important is to catch prostate cancer as early as possible, ideally before symptoms appear. The best way we have today to do that is through prostate cancer screening,” Dr. Melamed said.

The hospital will screen members of the community, both the insured and uninsured, free of charge. All patients will be notified by mail of their prostate screening results. Patients with abnormal test results also will receive a personal phone call. Additionally, follow up appointments will be available if an elevated PSA result or abnormal finding is detected.

Q&A sessions on $14.5M capital project begin tonight

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Central School District is holding a series of presentations outlining the $14,480,000 capital project proposed for the two school buildings in the district.

The first session is scheduled for tonight, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m., in the library of Greenville Middle/High School on Route 81 in Greenville. A similar presentation will be held Nov. 29 beginning at 6 p.m. at Scott M. Ellis Elementary School on Route 32.

Sessions will include a question-and-answer period where residents can find out more about the proposal.

Under the proposed project, the majority of renovations would take place at the elementary school and would include safety and classroom improvements.

If voters approve the project, it would build a new multi-purpose gym addition off the back of the current multi-purpose room at the elementary school. An existing multi-purpose room would be transformed into a new music suite, and another classroom would be changed into a new art room. A pre-kindergarten classroom would be enlarged, with an in-class restroom added. Classrooms in the front wing of the building would be renovated with new floors, refinished hardwood and new technology.

Safety improvements at the elementary school would include the creation of first- and second-floor corridor connections to exit stairs for safety in the event of an emergency.

There will also be roof restoration; replacement of the heating system boiler, which is more than 30 years old; upgrades to ventilation in every classroom, which was last installed in 1980; electrical and plumbing improvements, including the addition of more electrical outlets; and masonry work on the outside of the building.

At the middle/high school, an art suite will be expanded through construction of a new addition and other art classrooms will be renovated. Ventilation and a new exhaust fan will be added to the metal shop classroom, and asbestos abatement will take place in the band classroom. Similar to the elementary school, exterior masonry work and roof repairs will also be done.

The estimated budget for the capital project districtwide is $14,480,000, with the bulk of that amount — $11,908,904 going to the elementary school and $2,571,096 going to the middle/high school renovations, according to an October presentation by the district.

The breakdown of costs would be as follows – elementary school classroom renovations, $7,354,668; mechanical/heating/ventilation, $2,512,852; roofing $1,055,046; additions, $2,485,946; and other reconstruction, $1,071,488.

The project is expected to be paid for through state aid and the district’s capital reserve fund. The district anticipates there will be no impact on the tax rate for local taxpayers.

After the final question-and-answer session Nov. 29, district voters will have the final say on the project Dec. 6, with voting taking place 3-9 p.m. in the cafeteria of Scott M. Ellis Elementary School.

If approved, the final plans are scheduled to be submitted to the State Education Department in June, with bids expected to come in February 2024. Construction is expected to begin May 2024 and be completed in November 2025.
