SAUGERTIES — While it may have been official since early January, newly elected U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro, R-19, was sworn in locally in two separate ceremonies recently.

First, Molinaro headed to Binghamton in Broome County on the morning of Jan. 21 to take his oath of office in a local ceremony, then he headed to Ulster County to be sworn in at the Diamond Mills Hotel and Tavern in Saugerties in the afternoon.

The Saugerties swearing-in was administered by Chris Gibson, who formerly represented New York’s 19th Congressional District. The Binghamton oath was issued by Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar.

Molinaro, 47, was officially sworn into office Jan. 7 in Washington D.C.; the two services in Binghamton and Saugerties were ceremonial and intended to give local residents the opportunity to attend.

“Earlier this month, I raised my right hand and took my oath of office on the floor of the House of Representatives,” Molinaro said. “Today, I wanted to take this oath again — in front of the people of New York’s 19th Congressional District. These are the people I will be representing and the voices I will be raising in Washington. I am so thankful for this great honor and excited to be working on issues that matter to our community.”

The former Dutchess County Executive now represents New York’s 19th Congressional District, which includes Greene, Columbia, Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Sullivan, Tioga and Tompkins counties, along with portions of Otsego and Ulster counties.

During both local ceremonies, Molinaro outlined his priorities for the district, which include supporting the local agricultural community, improving public safety, lowering the cost of living, strengthening infrastructure, expanding access to mental health care, addressing the opioid epidemic, empowering individuals with disabilities and delivering quality constituent services, Molinaro said in a statement.

Molinaro, a Republican, defeated Democratic opponent Joshua Riley, a former New York State Court of Appeals law clerk, in November. He was one of four Republican congressional candidates statewide to flip a district from blue to red in the November election.

Since being sworn in to the 118th Congress, Molinaro was assigned to several House committees, including the committees on agriculture and on transportation and infrastructure.

“I am proud to serve on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure,” Molinaro said in a statement. “These assignments allow me to work on issues that matter to our community, and importantly, give upstate New York a seat at the table as Congress deliberates over the next Farm Bill and the rollout of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. I am excited to get to work.”

Molinaro was also selected to serve on the House Committee on Small Business.

“Small businesses in upstate New York are bearing the brunt of record-high inflation and desperately need support,” Molinaro said in a statement. “I will be focused on empowering entrepreneurs and reducing the burden government places on small businesses.
