COEYMANS — A high-speed chase that began in Coeymans and ended in Delmar led to the arrest of a local man on numerous charges, according to a statement from the town.
Anthony Starks, 24, of Coeymans, was arrested and charged in the incident.
The chase took place after Coeymans Police responded June 12 to a report of a reckless driver on Blodgett Hill Road in the town. The vehicle, an older, dark-colored pickup truck, was allegedly seen speeding and leaving the roadway, almost overturning, before entering a large field, according to the statement.
Coeymans Police were assisted by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office and searched the field where the vehicle was seen, according to the town. The pickup truck was seen leaving the field on Blodgett Hill Road at a “high rate of speed” and drove east on Cedar Grove Road.
Law enforcement attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful and a chase ensued, with Bethlehem Police and state police joining in the pursuit, according to the town.
“Bethlehem Police placed Stop Sticks on the roadway on Route 32, which effectively caused a tire blow-out, but the subject continued on Route 32,” according to the statement. “The suspect then turned north onto the Delmar bypass where he failed to yield for a red light and crashed into the rear of a vehicle entering from Elsmere Avenue.”
Stop Sticks are tire-deflation devices that are placed in the road to end high-speed chases by causing the vehicle’s tires to go flat.
After the vehicle crashed into another vehicle and was disabled, Starks is accused of exiting the pickup truck and fleeing on foot. He was tracked down by the Albany County Sheriff’s K9 patrol and arrested.
There were no injuries reported in the accident.
Starks was taken to Albany Medical Center where a blood sample was taken.
“He was found to be on federal parole for weapons offenses and had earlier been involved in a domestic violence incident in the town of Rotterdam,” according to the town statement.
Starks was remanded to Albany County Jail, where he is also being held on parole violations.
The town of Coeymans is expected to charge Starks with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, speeding, unauthorized use of a vehicle and aggravated unlicensed operation.
Additional charges by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office are also expected to be filed in connection with the accident at Route 32 and Elsmere Avenue in Delmar.
