RAVENA-COEYMANS-SELKIRK — Fourth graders from A.W. Becker Elementary School toured the State Capitol Building just before the end of school, with one group stumbling across a chance visit with the governor.
The classes visited the Capitol for a field trip as the school year was coming to a close.
Students split into groups to tour through the historic Capitol Building, which was completed in 1899.
The seat of government for the state of New York, it is the home of both the state Senate and Assembly. It also is the home office for the state governor.
As groups observed the elaborate halls and chambers of the Capitol, one group enjoyed a surprise visit from Gov. Kathy Hochul. She took a moment to speak to students, answered questions, and shook each of their hands before leaving.
Students also went to the observation deck atop the Corning Tower to enjoy the view before eating lunch outside on Empire State Plaza.
