VALATIE—A local resident and business owner died after she was struck by an SUV June 14.

State Police from the Livingston barracks investigated the fatal motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Main and Church streets in the village.

At 12:18 p.m., troopers were waved down and alerted to the collision between a vehicle and pedestrian at the intersection.

The Valatie Rescue Squad was dispatched to the scene by Columbia County 911 and took the pedestrian,  Joan E.(Gavigan) Archer, 77, of Valatie to Albany Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser operated by David L. Parlman, 26, of Chatham was eastbound on Main Street and made a left-hand turn onto Church Street. For unknown reasons, the Parlman vehicle struck Ms.Gavigan, who was walking west on Main Street in a marked pedestrian crosswalk.

Mrs. Archer later succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead by the attending physician at Albany Med.

This investigation remains ongoing.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Valatie Fire Department were also on the scene rendering assistance.

The Village of Valatie will conduct a candlelight vigil “in loving memory of business owner and community leader Joan Archer” on Church Street, Sunday, June 20 at 7 p.m.
