NASSAU – During the public meetings held in Nassau and Kinderhook in March 2014, the EPA committed to collecting surface water and sediment samples near the Dewey Loeffel Superfund site and in Kinderhook Lake. Samples were collected by the EPA Region 2 Division of Environmental Science and Assessment, Hazardous Waste Support Branch – Superfund Support Team in May 2014.
Approximately ten water and nine sediment samples were collected from locations above (north) and below (south) the water treatment plant on the Valatie Kill; on the Valatie Kill between Nassau Lake and Kinderhook Lake; and in Kinderhook Lake.
The Sampling Report, which summarizes the sampling event and results, is available on the EPA Dewey Loeffel Landfill webpage under “Additional Documents”: http://www.epa.gov/region2/superfund/npl/dewey/docs.html.
According to the conclusion in the report, “Based on this date and the information contained in this report, Kinderhook Lake does not appear to be impacted by the contamination from the Dewey Loeffel Landfill site.” The report states that some additional sediment samples will be collected below Nassau Lake in the Valatie Kill and surface water samples were collected from the Valatie Kill after direct discharge from the Dewey Loeffel Water began last December.
