KINDERHOOK–At an emergency meeting last Thursday, August 2, called by village Mayor Carol Weaver, the Village Board amended the amount it believes it will need to borrow for the proposed sewer project and the date for the vote. The board now hopes to win voter approval to borrow $231,466 for the $941,802 project.

The latest meeting followed a session late last month at which the board adopted a motion to move forward with a referendum on borrowing the money, and set the vote date. Mayor Weaver emailed The Columbia Paper saying that after the July meeting the amounts have changed and so has the date for the referendum.

Kinderhook residents will now vote Wednesday, August 15 at the village hall on Route 9 to determine whether to allow the board to borrow the $231,465.66 to connect 35 properties in the Kinderhook business district to the Village of Valatie’s sewer plant.

The total amount of the project is now set at $941,802, Mayor Weaver said in an email. “Between the grants and donations, we have $710,336.34,” she wrote. The village needs voter approval in order to borrow the money because the three members of the board who support the project did not constitute the supermajority required for the board to act on its own.

Originally the project was going to cost around $700,000. The village has received federal and state grants as well as $70,000 in donations. The Kinderhook and Valatie village boards settled on the terms of an intermunicipal agreement at the July meeting under which the 35 properties in Kinderhook sewer district would pay the same rates as Valatie residents pay.
