CHATHAM – A release from the Columbia County Board of Supervisors has announced that a state of emergency has been declared for the Village of Chatham and Town of Ghent beginning at 10 a.m. September 9 and continuing in effect for five days through 12:01 a.m. on September 14.

The release says the state of emergency has been declared due to a water main break in the Village of Chatham. All persons affected are being instructed to limit water usage to “essential use only.”

All affected agencies have been authorized to act in response to this emergency including the emergency funding process allowed by law, according to the release.

The Village of Chatham is reporting that the village “has had a source water main break. Residents and businesses are asked to limit water use to only essential needs. Crews are working on the break now.”

The village website, https://villageofchatham.com/ also says, “At this point there is no water to Edgewood Acres and limited water to the rest of the Village and Ghent. We are asking people boil their water until further notice.”

In addition to the Village of Chatham, the village water system also serves customers along state Route 66 into the Ghent hamlet.

Chatham Central School District Superintendent Sal DeAngelo said in a release Monday that the boil-water requirement “will not affect today’s dismissal time for school or after-school programs.”

He also said, “As a precaution and until further notice, all occupants in our buildings have been advised not to drink the water, but our toilet facilities are functioning as normal,” and added that the school district is “providing bottled water for students and staff in each building and for school sporting activities.”
