COPAKE – A bequest from Charlotte Shutts, who died in December 2022, has allowed the Roeliff Jansen Community Library to retire the $232,000 balance of its mortgage.

Ms. Shutts was a lifelong Hillsdale resident and supporter of the library. For several years, she served as president of the Friends of the Roe Jan Library. In her Last Will and Testament, she left instructions that funds from her estate be used to retire the library’s mortgage and that remaining funds be put toward the construction of an outdoor pavilion to be used for community activities.

“All those associated with the library – staff and patrons – have been the beneficiaries of Charlotte’s generosity over the years,” said Patricia Placona, president of the library’s board of trustees in a press release. “Now, her bequest means that the library community will continue to benefit from her forethought for years to come.”

Ms. Shutts was one of the original members of the library’s Flavia Bristol Planned Giving Society, which is named for the Hillsdale benefactor who in 1918 bequeathed $30,000 (the equivalent of $650,000 today) to found the Hillsdale Public Library – the predecessor of the Roeliff Jansen Community Library. The society honors Flavia’s generosity and encourages others to help shape the future of the Roe Jan community by making a bequest to the library in their will or by including the library in their estate plan – for example, by naming the library as a beneficiary of specified assets such as securities, real estate or tangible personal property.

The Roeliff Jansen Community Library, which is chartered to serve Ancram, Copake and Hillsdale, is located at 9091 Route 22, approximately one mile south of the light at theintersection of Routes 22 and 23.
