CAIRO — A Cairo man was arrested and faces multiple charges of rape and sexual abuse of a child in both Greene and Columbia counties, state police announced Wednesday.
Celino Reyes, 61, of Cairo, was arrested May 7, following an investigation that began after state police in New York were notified of possible sexual assault by Child Protection Services in Oregon, state police said in a statement.
“On Dec. 17, 2021, the state police were notified by the Oregon Child Protective Services Hotline that Celino Reyes sexually assaulted a minor that previously lived in Greene County, New York, and Columbia County, New York,” according to the statement. “State police notified Greene County CPS and learned that they also received a report that Reyes had sexually assaulted a minor on numerous occasions.”
Reyes was indicted by a grand jury in Columbia County on April 25 and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Reyes was arrested and processed for two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of first-degree attempted sexual abuse, police said.
He was arraigned in Columbia County Court and was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to return to court May 31.
The state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Catskill then received an arrest warrant for Reyes on May 3.
Reyes was arrested a second time May 7 and was charged with predatory sexual assault against a child and first-degree sexual conduct against a child. He was remanded to Greene County Jail on $50,000 bond and $100,000 bail.
He faces charges of first-degree rape, criminal sex act with a victim less than 11 years of age, first-degree course of sexual conduct of a child, first-degree aggravated sexual abuse, predatory sexual assault against a child, and sexual conduct against a child less than 13 years of age, all felonies, according to state police.
The case is being investigated jointly by state police investigators from Troop F and Troop K.
