GREENPORT – Columbia-Greene Community College’s Division of Nursing has hosted the Sandy Speenburgh Bike-a-thon – named for an honored, retired nursing faculty member – for five years, and 2020 will be no exception.

This year, the event has taken on a new look – being held virtually – and a new charge: raising funds for the nurses of Columbia Memorial Health.

Robbin Wase, administrative assistant for the Division of Nursing and coordinator of the bike-a-thon, explained that the event was originally planned for April 25 on the C-GCC campus, and typically raises funds for the Sandy Speenburgh Scholarship.

Now, cyclists will be asked to ride a distance of their choice in their own neighborhoods any time from April 25 to May 9, share a photo, video, or post about the ride on social media using the hashtag #Speenburgh2020. The entry fee is $20, or $10 for students, and riders may also collect additional donations.

“Anyone can participate: students, faculty, staff, and other community supporters, as long as they’re practicing social distancing, and anyone can make a donation in a rider’s name,” said Ms. Wase. “This year, we ride in honor of all nurses – especially those working at CMH, with which the C-GCC Nursing Division works very closely.”

Entry fees and donations may be made by check and mailed to Joan Koweek, c/o The Columbia-Greene Community College Foundation, 4400 Route 23, Hudson, N.Y. 12534.
