Sheriff Bartlett selects Davi for undersheriff

GREENPORT—Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett has announced his selection of Captain John Davi to serve as the county’s next undersheriff.

Captain Davi, a 27-year employee of the Sheriff’s Office, currently serves as the jail administrator, a position he has held since 2003.

Born and raised in Hudson, Captain Davi is the son of Salvatore and Lina Davi. He is a 1984 graduate of Hudson City High School and has completed course work at Columbia-Greene Community College, Hudson Valley Community College and the National Institute of Corrections in Aurora, CO.

He is a certified law enforcement instructor with specialties in suicide prevention, chemical agents, infectious disease and gang intervention.

Captain Davi was hired at the Sheriff’s Office in 1986 as a correction officer by Sheriff Paul J. Proper, Sr. Over the course of his career, he rose through the ranks from sergeant, to lieutenant, to his current position, in which he is responsible for the daily operations of the county correctional facility, its staff, and a $4 million plus budget.

Captain Davi is credited with earning New York State Sheriff’s Association Accreditation for the county jail and also with starting programs like the New Leash on Life dog training program, Veteran’s Assistance Program, Inmate Horticulture Program and the Inmate Work Crew Program.  He has received several awards and commendations during his tenure at the Sheriff’s Office, including the Sheriff’s Exceptional Duty Award, Unit Citation Award and the Lifesaving Award.

Captain Davi is a member of the New York State Law Enforcement Trainers Network, East Coast Gang Investigators Association, Hudson Correctional Facility Community Services Board, and the Questar III Law Enforcement Committee.

He is a 25-year member of the Greenport Fire Department, a member of the Federation of Polish Sportsmen and the Hudson Elks Club. He currently coaches junior varsity football for the Hudson City School District, and is a past board member and coach of the Hudson Little League and Columbia County Pop Warner.

Captain Davi lives in Greenport with his wife Barbara (Gyr). They have three sons: Andrew, John and Zachary, and a granddaughter, Abiona.

NEW LEBANON–Town Supervisor Tistrya Houghtling and Don Adams from Creighton Manning led the first of two public hearings on proposed sidewalks on the north and south side of Route 20 & 22. Mr. Manning has over 35 years’ experience in roadside engineering and brought illustrations of other projects and how this would work in New Lebanon.

The public hearing included a packed house with over 50 people present, plus others tuning in online. The state has awarded 80% of the proposed $2.5 million project for a Walkable Downtown, which means the Town of New Lebanon would need to spend approximately $500,000. If approved in a special election set for January 21, construction would likely start in 2027. The town currently has a fund balance of approximately $600,000 and the project would likely not have any impact on local property taxes, in part due to increased sales tax revenues.

Supervisor Houghtling reported that 25 of 28 property owners who are abutters to the proposed project approved it going forward. While a low priority in the town Comprehensive Plan according to town board member Craig Skerkis, the project would narrow appearance and perhaps slow traffic. There will remain three lanes for cars, including a center turn lane. There would be two crosswalks, one at New Lebanon Library and a second linking Midtown Mall and Valley Plaza. The north side would extend from existing sidewalk at the New Lebanon Junior/Senior High School to New Lebanon Library. The south side would go from Midtown Mall to New Lebanon Library.

Key building material is stone dust which is already being used in the town park and is approved for those with disabilities. Don Adams showed pictures of similar walks from around the state. It is cheapest, fits for a rural feel, and is easier to maintain. He highly recommended not trying to put grass or other planting.

The special election will be held on January 21, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Meeting Hall at 732 US Highway 20. Absentee ballots are available.
