HUDSON–Columbia County government spent $1 million less in the first quarter of 2010 than it did the year before and ended up with “a $1.5 million favorable net variance” compared to what the budget anticipated the county would spend.

The results were released Monday, May 3, by Roy Brown (R-Germantown), chairman of the county Board of Supervisors, and Art Baer (R-Hillsdale), the board’s budget officer. The results were for the three-month period ending March 31 of this year.

The release from the chairman says that non-property tax revenues, including state aid, were off almost $1.0 million during the quarter, but those losses were offset by reductions of $2.3 million in salary and non-salary expenses.

Control of hiring and overtime were cited in the release as the major source of the savings.

“These results were very difficult of attain and are due in great part to the efforts of the county’s department heads and employees,” Mr. Brown said in the release.
