Schoolgirl Queen to be crowned August 30 at the Fair

CHATHAM – Representatives of Columbia County’s six public high schools will compete for the title of 2013 Schoolgirl Queen on Friday, August 30, in one of the Columbia County Fair’s most popular and enduring traditions.

At 6:30 p.m., the gowned contestants will arrive at the stage in front of the grandstand in vintage convertibles and be introduced by emcees Meg Dooley and Cathie Lee Visscher.

Judging is based on personality, poise and appearance. The winner will be crowned by last year’s queen, Elizabeth Meyers from Taconic Hills Central School, and receive a $500 prize.

Here are this year’s contestants:

Miss Chatham

Representing Chatham High School is Hannah Bervy, daughter of Pam and Serge Bervy of Austerlitz. In school, she has participated in Art Honor Society, Ski Club, and Art & Literary Magazine. Her interests include horseback riding, skiing, fishing, hiking, animals, photography, and spending time with family.

Miss Germantown

Emily Rifenburgh, the daughter of Penny and Scott Rifenburgh of Germantown, represents Germantown Central High School. Her favorite school subject is English, and she has played on the varsity basketball, softball and volleyball teams.

Miss Hudson High

Representing Hudson High School is Cortlynn Jepsen, the daughter of Michael and Stephanie Jepsen of Hudson. She has participated in varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball, Varsity Club, and Student Council. Marine science is her favorite subject. Outside of school, she referees soccer and basketball for the Hudson Youth Department and helps her younger sisters’ softball teams. She enjoys physical fitness, sports, and spending time with family.

Miss Ichabod Crane

Carolyn Farley, the daughter of Daniel and Ellen Farley of East Greenbush, represents Ichabod Crane High School, where she is Student Council president and a member of the National Honor Society. She’s in the Crane Acting Troupe, Spectrum select singing group, chorus, and French Club. Last year, she represented Ichabod Crane at a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership conference at RPI. Carolyn is a dancer and assistant dance teacher, a Girl Scout, and a cantor in her church’s teen choir. She also enjoys reading, making bracelets, camping, and movies.

Miss New Lebanon

Representing New Lebanon High School is Meghan Moffit of Stephentown, the daughter of Jenny Moffit and Philip Moffit. In addition to serving as class co-president, she has participated in Travel Club, chorus, dances, Student Council, and the “Bigger Faster Stronger” program. Her hobbies and interests include soccer, basketball, softball, and animals. She also provides care for her grandfather.

Miss Taconic Hills

Taconic Hills High School is represented by Mikayla Van Alphen, daughter of Pamela and Randy Van Alphen of Hillsdale. In school, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club, Select Chorus, SADD, Mixed Chorus, has played field hockey and softball. She also has been involved in Dollars for Scholars, yearbook, and mentoring third-graders. She was the prom queen. Outside of school, Mikayla enjoys jazz and hip-hop dancing, photography, creative writing, volunteering for local charity events, reading, baking, exercise, making jewelry, swimming and fishing.

Held annually over Labor Day weekend at the Columbia County Fairgrounds in Chatham, this year’s Fair will run from Wednesday, August 28 through Monday, September 2.
