Camphill Village launches a $15 million capital improvement campaign

COPAKE – The Camphill Village Copake Foundation has launched the public phase of a campaign to raise $15-million by 2015 to improve aging buildings and infrastructure at Camphill Village and to complete construction at the new elder care community at Camphill Ghent in Ghent.

Camphill Village USA Inc. is a community of 240 people, some with special needs, who live and work together on a 615-acre organic/biodynamic farm.

In a press release announcing the campaign, Chris Kersten, Director of Development, said, “Over the past two years, we have quietly raised more than $9.6 million toward our $15 million goal. In this next, public phase we will be reaching out to people beyond our traditional donor base to help us cross the finish line.”

In remarks at the campaign launch, Bill Vogt, President of the Board of Directors of Camphill Village, said of the $15-million they are seeking, $11.3 million will be used to stabilize and improve existing houses, workshops, and buildings at Camphill Village, and to add new structures, roadways, and open spaces.

“Another $3.7 million,” said Mr. Vogt, “will be used to complete construction at Camphill Ghent, the new elder care residential community which opened in January, 2012.”

The $15-million Building Possibilities campaign will fund Phase 1 of Camphill Village’s 15-year Master Plan. Projects in the first phase include: a new residential house; renovation of two other homes to appropriate levels of safety, structural integrity and functionality; upgrading the Village water system; new workshops for weaving, candle making, stained glass and bookbinding; a new co-op market; construction of a new administration and youth guidance building; and completing construction at Camphill Ghent.

Completed parts of the project include: a fiber optic network; expansion of Sunny Valley Barn and new access road and parking spaces at Fountain Hall (completed)
