Weigelt to lead Claverack GOP slate


CLAVERACK – Clifford “Kippy” Weigelt outpolled Robert Preusser to become the Claverack Republican candidate for supervisor at the Claverack Republican caucus July 8 at the Claverack Town Park, Church Street, Mellenville.

Mr. Weigelt received 148 votes to Mr. Preusser’s 50. Unofficial write-in candidates James Keegan and Jack Race received one vote each.

Mr. Weigelt will face an as-yet unnamed Democratic candidate for the post of Claverack Supervisor in the November 5 election.

Brian Keeler was the top vote-getter in a three-way race for two seats on the Claverack Town Board with 186, followed by Stephen Hook with 136. James Van Deusen scored 86.

In other activity, Town Clerk/Tax Collector Mary Jean Hoose, Town Justice Charles Hoag, Highway Superintendent Louis Lamont, and Assessor Charles Brewer were unopposed and were nominated unanimously. All are incumbents for their positions. They will all join Weigelt on the November ballot.

The caucus was conducted by the Claverack Republican Committee, with Committeemen Michael Johnston and Charles Schram serving as co-chairs, along with Janice Anderson as secretary. Vote tabulators were Terry Guntert, Bill Arnold, Jim Keegan and Joan Mattson.
