GREENPORT—Two members of the Columbia County Emergency Management Office have been deployed to New York City at request of the state Office of Emergency Management, according to a press release from Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr.
Director William Black and Deputy Director Paul D’Onofrio left the morning of November 3 for a 72-hour deployment to Queens to assist with distribution of supplies for the residents of New York City. They will be coordinating the deployment of generators, portable lighting and other equipment to the residents of New York City in its ongoing recovery efforts.
Columbia County Emergency Management Office joins firefighters from six Columbia County fire departments who were deployed to assist the residents of New York City in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
A total of 18 firefighters responded with five trucks to assist Nassau County. Four firefighters each from Claverack, Niverville and Stuyvesant and two each from Ghent, Red Rock and Valatie departed just after noon October 30 on their journey south.
Apparatus responding included: Claverack 12-1, Ghent 22-5, Niverville 45-1, Red Rock 76-1 and Stuyvesant 52-3. They staged at the Nassau County Fire Training Center and were deployed from there. The firefighters each worked a 72-hour shift.
Columbia County Fire Departments continue to support the recovery effort on Long Island. Red Rock and Claverack were demobilized November 2 and arrived home around midnight. Niverville, Stuyvesant and Ghent came home November 2, according to a press release from Columbia County Fire Coordinator John Howe.
At 8 a.m. November 2, Hudson, Germantown and Kinderhook with Type I engines and Greenport with a Heavy Rescue deployed to Nassau County for 72 hours. Saturday morning, November 3 at 3 a.m. Chatham and Spencertown were deployed to Suffolk County with SEFU units for 72 hours, Mr. Howe said in the release, adding thanks to everyone for their efforts.
