NEW YORK CITY—A Columbia County woman is accused of cashing $5,599 in disability checks mailed to her dead sister, according to a press release from the New York State Insurance Department.
Charged with insurance fraud and falsifying business records, Maryann Wagoner, 33, of Niverville was taken into custody by Schodack State Police June 25 following an investigation by John Toucher of the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau.
Ms. Wagoner is accused of failing to notify American International Group Insurance Company that her sister died in March 2007.
Ms. Wagoner was her sister’s caregiver and had power of attorney. According to a press release from the insurance fund, she allegedly endorsed and cashed five checks mailed to the sister after her death.
If convicted, Ms. Wagoner faces a sentence of up to seven years in prison.
A hearing will be scheduled in Rensselaer County Court.

Geskie appointed new Chamber president

CATSKILL — Pamela Geskie has been named the new president and executive director of the Greene County Chamber of Commerce.
Geskie takes over following the resignation of the Chamber’s longtime chief, Jeffrey Friedman.
Friedman announced in August he was stepping down from the post he held since 2013 to pursue an opportunity with his family’s Clifton Park business.
Geskie was selected by an Executive Director Search Committee formed after Friedman’s resignation.
Her appointment was announced Wednesday by Nicole Bliss, chairwoman of the Chamber’s board of directors.
“We know that Pamela will do an outstanding job in serving the community and our member businesses,” Bliss said in a statement.
Geskie served as the organization’s interim executive director after Friedman stepped down, and prior to that was membership director for the Chamber for four years.
Before joining the Greene County Chamber of Commerce, Geskie worked in advertising and marketing. She has over 30 years of experience in media sales including serving as director of advertising and marketing for numerous area media companies, including Columbia-Greene Media, which publishes The Daily Mail; Ulster Publishing; the Saugerties Post Star; and The Daily Freeman.
Geskie said working with the Chamber these past four years enabled her to connect with the community and its businesses.
“That’s when it happened — the spark,” she said.
Geskie has three children, a daughter and two sons, eight grandchildren and will soon become a great-grandmother for the first time.
